Hi Pducharme, welcome on the forum, and a cracking first post.

That pdf you posted is going to cause a lot of discussion I think.

I will kick it off with a few of my own:

1. The Canadian base price is CAD$38 500 which translates to a US$ price of around 40k, before extras. Is my conversion accurate or are Canadian prices more due to taxes etc. With options you are looking at US$50k for a high spec. Yikes

2. Is the 2.8i in the spec sheet a 6-cyl or the new turbo 4?

Probably the Quebec sales tax...

Hi Mario,

1. The Canadian prices of all BMW are always a lot more than the prices in the USA. It was always like that, maybe import taxes, I don't know. But you are right, it's why I would be looking at the base model + 1 or 2 options.

2. The model specified in the PDF is the new 4Cyl Turbo (N20) motor. My dealer also said in the email the PDF came with :

"The X1 will only have one base model (the one in PDF) and it's with the new motor (4cyl, Turbo 2.0L, 241 hp, 258 lb-pi), 0-100km/h in only 6.7sec. Fuel consomption 6.7L/100 km (highway). They will be available in our dealership in late april. it's the MY2012. On March 23rd, there will be a launch party where we can see (but not try) the new X1 and X3."

@gatekeeper. This is the price WITHOUT taxes :P So it's the base price for all canada. To that, you have normally to add Freight (almost 2000$) + the taxes (Depends on Province).

Or maybe the Freight was already in that price? It was not specified, but i doubt it.

The best comparison is to show what the X3 2.8 costs compared to the X1 2.8 then we can make the comparison for the US.

I take it the auto box as thats not listed as an option. Not too bad then as thats a $2k option here.

How does the price compare to, say a 325i in Canada?

mario, the 328i xDrive Base Price is 39 950$. We don't have a 325 anymore, only a 323i and 328i, 335i and 335d. The 323i doesn't have a xDrive model (not good in Québec, we just receive in 24h 70cm of snow in my city and i'm not in a mountain!).

The X3 28i Base Price here is 41 900$ (3 400$ higher than base X1 Price).

Personally, I may prefer the X1 because i'll use it only in city, not towing anything and lower fuel consumption is good!

mario. Forgot to answer about the auto box. I think it's a 8 Speed Autobox on the base model (included in the price) because bmw.ca just launch a section for the X1 and they put in the tech. spec the Auto box with 8 speed...

I looked at the option package and the Canadian packages are somewhat different than what we typically get in the US. Obviously the US market is the most competitive in the world which will hold our prices below Canada but that $3400 difference probably won't be off by more than $500 ($3900-$2900). So if the base price of the X3 2.8 is $36,750 in the US then we can expect $33,850-$32850 with the best guess of $33,350.

I hope Canadian price will someday get better. Now that our dollar worth more than the US dollar, It would make sense, but I guess the number of sales have something to do too. Usa obviously is a bigger market for BMW than Canada !

I realllly don't know, except the small chat with my Sale guy and that PDF, I don't know more than that. But if you look at the description of the Sport Package in the PDF, it only include :

2LH - 18" wheel, perf.RFT tire
2XA - Shift paddles
481 - Sport Seats

I assume the new M-Sport package would have more stuff in it ?? I don't know, let's hope it's the new M-Sport package!

No manual, no m-sport, no N55.. what a boring release. I'll wait till next year. M-sport is ZMP IIRC.

Depends on people, me personally i prefer the new 8Speed AT, but it's because I loose my love for manual transmission long time ago :P Probably that trying it in a new BMW, I would like it. Also, my wife is not good with the manual, I prefer to make her happy

These figures seem very reasonable. I wish they had a 6MT option for US around 32.5k, then I would have seriously considered that.

BTW you Canadinas have free health care, so stop complaining about cars being too expensive. Somebody has to pay for that.

There may still be a 6 speed manual option for the US. Canada is only 1/10 of the US volume so there may be enough volume is the US to warrant it. I can understand cutting back packages and options where there isn't a lot of volume because it greatly reduces cost. If they can put it in the Countryman I don't know why they couldn't do the same for the X1 in the US. I bet they will sell more X1's than Countryman is the US.

Just got off the phone with my BMW dealer and would like to share the great news he game me. They will be offering a manual transmission as a special order for about 400$CDN!

Not bad for a market 1/10th the size of theUS market!

M-Sport will be available in Europe as early as March or April build dates, so it will probably take a few months before the M-Sport is available in Canada.

I am interested to find out how the N20 performs and how the X1 will impact the sales of the X3....especially in an SUV rich culture like Canada.

As someone who gets "free healthcare" (i.e. paid for with my tax dollars), I'm not sure I get the connection between said "free healthcare" and the practice of foreign automakers charging Canadians 20% more than our American friends for a similarly equipped car.....

Our prices here are also about 20% more than the USA so probably much like yours. Never quite figured it out either. My financial wiz of a wife mentions "consumer resistence" levels to prices.

Spare a thought though for our Oz friends, they are another 20% on top of our prices
