BMW releases new BMW X1 xDrive28i with BMW TwinPower Turbo and M-Sports Package
68
COMMENTS

Tonight, BMW dropped a bit of a bombshell, very discreetly and buried within a press release about a new edition to the BMW X1 family. BMW has as of now officially launched the new BMW X1 xDrive28i.

The xDrive28i is the familiar X1 we already know and love but now has under its hood a brand new 2.0L gas powered 4-Cylinder engine which uses BMWs TwinPower turbo technology, good for 245HP and 350Nm of torque. This all adds up to a 0-60 time of 6.1seconds. Thats damn good for a turbo 4 cylinder geared towards efficiency. You can read all about this bombshell of a new engine in our separate post here.

The new turbo 4-cylinder engine will come mated to a standard 6-speed manual transmission or an 8-speed automatic transmission. The 6-speed manual cars will also have included start-stop technology further adding to the fuel efficient intentions of this car.

The car is officially rated at a staggering 35.7 MPG, which is a 5.7MPG improvement from past models. Co2 emissions are rated at 183 g/km.

Follow this link for all information on the M-Sport Package.

For now, check out all the photos of the new X1 xDrive28i below.

I love the numbers! But since it is taking on the 28i name, is it going to replace the N52? I really hope not since it is an awesome engine.

Unfortunately yes. It's been said that the N52 is going to be replaced by a turbo 4, and here it is. BMW can't keep the N52 around; people are going to see similar numbers and better efficiency coming from a turbo 4, and they'll go for that. Much like the Audi situation with the A4 2.0T vs 3.2. The typical BMW buyer won't notice the advantages of the N52.

N52 is dead. In the past week, there have already been reports that BMW is replacing the N52 in the Z4 and 528i with a 4-cylinder turbo. I imagine that this engine is replacing the N52 in all "28i" models across the range.

At 15 more HP and 50 more ft lbs torque which is much more easily tuned with probably better fuel economy, I would take it over my N52 equipped car..

Forgive me if it's already been said, but what is the starting price of the X1 28i? I'm absolutely in love with this car. The fuel economy is amazing. Too bad I just put down an order for a 3yr lease on a 20mpg hwy M3.

No pricing yet, the car still isn't officially announced or available in the US

But at least they have done a great job with the replacement engine. Can't wait to see how it tunes

Edit: To the mods, i believe this and the other new engine topic should be combined since the conversation seems to be the same.

The thought of a turbo 4 cylinder in a 5 series is unpalatable. Even if it has as much output as an EVO or STI with 300/300, the thought of a 4 cylinder in a 5 series don't make sense. I have a feeling the sales will conveniently leave out the number of cylinder and focus on hp and efficiency.

I doubt it matters. N52 does not even belong in a 4000 lb car anyway. The 528 is positively anemic no matter which of these engines powers it. Now the CAFE will go up and make room for M car efficiency levels.

Do you not get the N53 direct injection in the states? in a 528i or 330i they can achieve similar mpg. The N52 has been dead for ages in the UK thank god, no more noisy HVA's!

Will the UK get the petrol Turbo4

Last time I asked BMW UK (about two months ago) they said that there are no plans to introduce a petrol to the UK. Wonder if its changed with the new engine, I will ask them again.

Anyone know what the figures are for the new engine?

So is this already in production then? Order banks open? Availability in March?

(I am talking about Europe and ROW - I know that North Ameican sales of the X1 will not start until later this year)

I ask because I'd really like to see a full technical in depth document from BMW on this new engine. Is the official name of the engine "N20" or something else?

Assuming BMW doesn't start a completely new 'code' for their engines, it should be called either N45B20 or N44B20.

Best regards,
south

Best regards,

Except for N44, N42 through N47 are already taken by the current 4 cylinder BMW gasoline and diesel engines though south, according to wikipedia anyway

I had seen a magazine claim that the new I4 was N20 for the 2L and N13 for the 1.6L to be shared with mini. It was in an article posted here on BimmerPost, I'll try to dig it up.

Nope, we never got it, that's why I seem to get such a negative vibe against the N52 in these boards. The N53 is a much better motor and the pinnacle of BMW's non-M NA I6's. You guys do pay much more for your cars though. We get our Bimmers here for the price of a UK Honda Accord.

Actually, sales will start in North America (i.e. Canada) in early Spring 2011.

From this article it seems as though NA X1s won't get the 4 banger? Is it true?

http://wot.motortrend.com/four-1-bmw...-x1-24599.html

"BMW officials tell us that this engine won’t be offered in U.S.-spec X1s, but confirm this engine is destined for the U.S. in other models. We’ve already heard the Z4 roadster is due to receive this engine sometime next year, but knowing BMW’s knack for dispersing engines across its portfolio, there’s a good chance we’ll see it in volume models like the 1- and 3 Series lines."
