go flats and repairing them

ok, so I'm getting my go flats tomorrow, I have some options as far as repair ,
was looking at a tire pluggin kit, but I just thought..
could I just not screw a wood screw or similar into a tire as a temporary fix
also if I get a screw or nail in the tire, surly it may slow leak, but generally it will only be a problem if you pull it out.
and of course a gash you wont be able to fix

ideas and thoughts?

Go to tire place they will put a plug in for 12 dollars.

Though if you want a peace of mind, have kids in the car and frequently use the highway then buy new tires imho....

Many tire places will not plug run-flats (that's what you mean, right OP?).



+1 on getting new tires. Run flats are the worst thing that could have happened to BMW next to turbocharged engines.

Myself included, since I will be ordering my second in September.

Hopefully I will have better luck with this one. Seems like BMW got the twin turbo thing right with the S55. N54 was a disaster. I don't miss it at all, shitty motor.

Just plug it with a kit.....they are runflats after all.....that's what I would do!
Of course the safety Nazi's will tell you to get new tires...but if saving money is your thing and the tires are otherwise good...keep'em!
But if your sick of runflats harshness....I see this as a good reason to upgrade to non-runflats and for sake of economics!

Yeah. My car was a second gen N54, Procede V5, 3 inch catless AR's, 3.5 inch straight through exhaust, Injen CAI, HPF FMIC. Put down around 397 whp, was a monster.


Was also very loud. Got rid of it around 92K.

Are we calling run flats "go flats" now? Or, is OP talking about running regular tires and asking what he should have with him in case of a flat since his car does not have a spare.

I feel like no one was able to decrypt the OP but that makes me skeptical of my alternate interpretation.

OP, if you are switching from run flats to standard tires, you should purchase a plug kit and keep it in the trunk. That or a can of Fix-a-flat is about all you can do outside of buying a wheel from a salvage yard, mounting a tire on and keeping it in your trunk.

And no, a screw will not do the trick. Maybe with a tiny puncture, in a pinch, with no other alternative. ....Get a plug kit to keep you on the road and then take the tire to get a proper patch applied to the inside.

What's 500 RPM difference anyway. BMW turbos do that with their standard rough idle.

I did the same thing because $65-$100 dollars a tire is cheaper than $150+ a tire. On the other hand, I have to have a donut in the trunk now which takes up a lot of trunk space.

It's a sacrifice for going cheap.

I honestly regret going to a regular tire. IMO If you buy tires and get the replacement warranty, there is no need to go to a regular tire. Keep the runflats. If you end up having to get a new tire make sure you get the replacement warranty and confirm that runflats are covered.

I'm probably going to get rid of my factory runflats after the tread wears out. I was hesitant because there's no room for a spare but with a kit like this, may not be necessary:

People willing to patch it are hard to find; I had to drive about 12 miles to go find a shop that was willing to do it when there are at least 30 tire shops in a 10 mile radius of me... Hint: Any place that sells used tires and barely speaks English (at least here in the LA area)? BINGO.
