Underfloor tray

Is it safe to remove the underfloor tray and just use the normal cover? This makes the boot usefully deeper.

The normal cover seems quite hard and robust.

Unless you plan on carrying concrete blocks in the trunk, there should be no problem. Just keep in mind there is a bettery on the right bottom hand side.

I had the same preoccupation lately, and I'm still a little worried that heavy luggage may damage the battery and wiring at the bottom the trunk. Anybody knows if it's possible to find somewhere a rigid underfloor tray, as opposed to the soft one which is mounted in the car?

Doubt you'll find such a specific device aftermarket. Check with your BMW Dealer for an OEM one.
In my opinion you are going thru a lot of trouble to gain an inch or so...
