What we need (in the US) is a 135i M (hatchback) with xdrive and a manual!

What purpose does one hope to serve by visiting an X1 forum to post, "I hate the X1"?
Seems like a sad existence.
I'll give the benefit of the doubt and call, TROLL.

Meh, last year I drove the XC70 with that turbo 3.0L I6 down the autobahn. Not nearly as powerful as 300hp and 325 ft-lb rating would suggest, not nearly as powerful at the N55 feels, and actually I thought it sounded pretty terrible at high RPM compared to BMW I6.

I don't know what the difference between the Volvo and BMW designs are. I have read that the Volvo engine is compromised in some way to get it to fit transversely, but I don't know what that really means. I just know that I wasn't accelerating as fast as I would have in the 335i I've driven back home in the US and the car was speed limited somewhere in the 130-135mph range so despite the first time in my life ever being on the autobahn, I was only able to beat my personal fastest speed by ~5mph.

As far as I know, it was designed to fit both ways. It's basically their trusty old inline five with an extra cylinder crammed in to the same space. (Personally, I think they should have stuck with the more frugal I5)

Engines vary, perhaps you got an especially poor X1 35i example and own a particularly strong E92. Also new engine and software vs broken in. In any case I personally don't find my 35i sluggish or rough (all paddle shifting) despite the fact that I came from and still have an M3 (not to mention other higher HP cars). After a month or so still finding it a well sorted, practical and enjoyable ride. Hopefully you can have some better seat time in one in different conditions but of course opinions differ in any case

Seriously considered the XC60 (and X3) but that higher bigger numb steering SUV experience lost out to the more fun X1

Well for starters it may be in the X1 forum, but it's also a lead story on Bimmerposts home page. And it's not trolling, the forum exists to share the knowledge and beliefs of everyone, good and bad. You don't have to agree.

But to reinforce my initial comment, a lot of people dislike the X1 and view it as a bad concept in marketing. It has inept handling, non-existent off-road ability and is the ugliest car we have ever made.

Begs the question.....why?

You know the same argument has been made about the E82, right? I owned one of those too, and an M Coupe, ugly is good.

In the US, the X1 is also the only way to get a wagon with the N55, so we have that going for us, while I think you guys down south can get an E91 and F31 with the N55 (and all three pedals) right?

So you think the X1 is uglier than say the 5GT? I happened to see one of the old 318i hatchbacks yesterday and I think the X1 looks better than that car. I think the X1 looks great from most angles though there are some where the car appears awkward.

Leaving looks aside- looks are always subjective- I will grant the lack of off road ability while noting that here in the US that only 15% of SUVs sold are ever taken off road. Along with the incoming 320 the base X1 is the cheapest BMW available in the US market. As such it makes tremendous sense here as an entry level BMW to tempt people looking at other luxury and near luxury crossovers. The only reason I'm driving a BMW today is the X1. The X3 is more than I want to pay and the 3 Touring was not available when I bought mine plus it is also in another price bracket and thus not viable for me.

For the type of vehicle it is I find the handling excellent. It certainly handles better than any of the cars I compared it to like the Jetta SportWagon and the Acura TSX Sportwagon, to say nothing of the $30K class of SUVs. The versions that retain the hydrologic steering seem to be highly praised from their steering feel and overall handling ability. I realize you are in a different market so perhaps the options there are different than in the US.

I looked very hard and at the end of the day there was no other vehicle on the US market that offered the cargo capacity, handling, quiet cabin, and ability to go 0-60 in under 7 seconds while still coming in under $40K.

Inept handling? Not in my world. I purchased the X1 because of performance + utility.

I do think it is relatively ugly. I wish I could have an Evoque shell with a X1 inside.

If so many people don't like the X1 then why did BMW sell as many X1's as Cadillac ATS's in the fall? Both were new and both were available the same amount of time and about the same price. Obviously a lot of people like the X1. Great marketing concept in my opinion, majored in marketing in college and built a consumer goods company from $16 million to $180 million so I know marketing. Inept handling, pass the bong because your smoking something really good. Most BMW SUV's never go off road and most SUV's never go off road so what's your point?
Go buy a Chinese Volvo if you want, I personally don't want to support the Chinese (yes they own Volvo). Once they have to build product without Ford parts they will be SOL.

Mate it's got nothing to do with trolling. All the points made are good points and people can clearly justify why they bought one which is good.

I also understand the American market is different to the European and Australian markets where my 135 with toys cost $100,000. I'd love an M3 but $180,000+ is too expensive, so I compromised, and I get that. Performance, tick, handling, tick, space, compromise. 2 out of 3.

Doesn't change my opinion of the X1 though, it gets 0 out of 3. And in Australia they've only sold 6,000 since they launched it in 2009 so it's not exactly popular.

If the M135 was widely available in the US that's probably what you would buy instead but that would trash the X1 range and BMW aren't that stupid.

I'd be happy to drag race your 135 with my X1 for pink slips if you'd like. I'm completely serious. I'll even pay to have you and your X1 shipped to the U.S (I'd still come out ahead since I'll win), and we'll videotape the whole thing and post it on the forum. If you're interested send me a PM.

I'd be happy to show you in person how my X1 outperforms your 135.

Not to mention, your 135 and a M135i are completely useless in my climate for half of the year - and my X1 has more horsepower than both anyway. Whether you like it or not, the US market is different than that of Australia, and the X1 35i is a better car in every respect than the M135i for my climate and needs.

It is when you didn't explain in your first why you hate it.
Just blabing out a comment like that is very trollish.

I think the X1 is a sexy looking vehicle. I like the big hood and front grills.
Its an compact SUV, classic BMW X lines.
But again, maybe I have weird taste.
BMW is not trying to sell X1's to M car owners.
At least thats how I understand it.

I'm always amazed at the car prices some people are faced with. Worse if those numbers are Australian dollars because I think it is trading higher against the US dollar. Is that a tax or import duty thing?

From what I've seen the M135 is an awesome car. Interior space vs X1 and price would be the make or break points for me. But since we are never going to get the M135 over here I guess it doesn't matter.

Please don't compare your Australian market to the Europeans. They're nothing alike, as much as you'd love to think so.

And your opinion of the X1 mirrors your relative sales - i.e. the MINORITY

Sounds like fun! My 135 runs a JB4 stage 2 with meth, KV3's, Michelin super sports and the usual M3 subframe bushings and control arms mods.
