What is the X1? Is it an Audi Allroad and Volvo XC70 competitor? From the pictures it definitely looks much lower than the X3 and other small crossover SUVs.

What will be the differentiation between this and the 3er GT besides styling?

Sorry.. I meant Outback:

Wasn't necessarily a bad thing.. Just noticing & realizing that BMW is entering markets they've never touched before and it's a very interesting time for them.

While I can see what you are getting at, that Subaru isn't even remotely sporty lke the x1 is.

It will compete with the Audi Q3, new Porsche, new Mercedes that will be coming out soon. The Audi Allroad is much larger and starts at over $40K. It does not have a true direct competitor and actually probably competes more with the new 3 series wagon and Countryman from Mini. It might compete with the Evoque but is a lot less expensive.

The Q3 is on a ssslow boat from Germany... AND it will likely only come w/the standard issued [211hp] 2.0 TFSI VW/Audi engine, not the [315hp de-tuned] 2.5 TFSI used in the TTRS.

The Countryman is Large for a Mini, however it is not in the same segment as this x-car. The direct competitor size wise to some of the cars you are referring to is the possible X3 M35i, and the upcoming X4 & X4M. The Evoque is overpriced, and underpowered, and is simply a glamor-mobile.

congrats - I've already seen 3 of these driving around Austin in the last 2 weeks, so i'm sure these will be big sellers (esp in the younger population...)

Glad to see it! If you don't mind can you state how tall you are and how the height of the X1 compares?

Very Nice!

I think the X1 is a MUCH more solid buy than the X3 and you've specc'd yours very well..........congrats.

One thought- the wheels you have the X5 does to but in 20 inch and I think they would look great on yours. If they fit....

Looks great! Love the matte wood trim, wish they would add that option to the 3 Series.

Thanks everyone for all the great comments!

I've driven about 1,140 miles in it now, and it drives like a dream.
The color is different from the Deep Sea Blue Metallic, I'll try to take more photos of the car sitting next to other BMWs (in particular next to an X6 that's deep sea blue metallic). It's difficult to capture the color accurately in a photo. The light blue / touch of teal can be seen best when it's sunny.
I'm very happy with the way I configured it. The color and the matte wood trim are unique and I've gotten quite a few compliments on it. The N20 engine with the 8 speed transmission is surprisingly quick and fun to drive! The gas mileage appears to be great as well, but I won't analyze consumption until I've driven a few more miles. And even though it's a 4 cylinder engine, you can still hear the typical, pleasant, BMW "roar" (just quieter when compared to the larger engines).
I saw a thread about DVD playback. I was skeptical when I read about it, but I tried it, and it works.
Someone asked about the gas cap. It's just a screw-on cap. Attached are photos.

I'm very happy with the new car, and I have yet to see an X1 other than mine on the road (except a pre-LCI one from Canada I saw a few weeks ago).
I will share more thoughts later this week, and hopefully I'll have a few more photos to share with you by then.

Thanks for sharing the pix, and congrats on your ride! I'm planning to order an X1, and am going back & forth between the "deep sea blue" and the "midnight blue."

I'm rather confused by some of the pictures you'd posted - in the first post, your car looks a dark blue; but in the more recent closeups of the gas cap, the paint looks almost green? Add to this the confusion I'm caused by the BMW configurator (see attached, midnight blue on top, deep sea on bottom), and I'm at a complete loss.

On the BMW site, it looks practically teal; but none of the pix I've found on the 'net, including yours, look ANYthing like the BMW website representation

Would appreciate any addt'l pix you can share, or any observations on what this "midnight blue" _actually_ looks like.

I saw a midnight blue X1 in person last weekend when I did test drive. The real midnight blue color looks in person is completely different from the one built on BMW website. The color is very dark and varies with sunlight intensity. Under weak sunlight, it looks like dark blue or black. Under intensive sunlight, the color looks 60% blue and 40% green. In short, the midnight blue is a unique color and rarely seen on a parking lot. If you like dark color, it is a beautiful color.

Thanks - many of the midnight blue X1 colors I've seen on the 'net make it look practically indistinguishable from the deep sea blue, hence my confusion. e.g., check out the attached "midnight blue" pix I'd found.

That being said, it's good to know that the m. blue varies based upon lighting. My current car is an Audi A3 in dark blue; and thought I like dark blue, I kind of wanted something different, which is why I was considering something other than the deep sea blue (which I have seen in person, btw ... looks very similar to my A3).

I see you're in the Bay Area - curious, was your test drive at Concord BMW, I believe they have a m. blue X1 there.

Thanks for the shots of the tank.

Wow, what a great photo of your car in in the sunlight. That blue color is amazing.
I originally had my heart set on jet black, but now, not sure.

Yes, I am in the Bay Area. I went to Steven Creek BMW twice. They have two X1s; one is xDrive35i, midnight blue, and the other is sDrive28i, white. In my second time visit, the midnight blue one was disappeared (sold) and the white was pending for sale.
No, the midnight blue looks different from the deep sea blue. The photos posted by PaulJ above are actually close to what I saw in person. The ones with gas door open show the midnight blue color under strong sun lighting -- a kind of the mix of blue and green. The one in parking lot shows the color without strong direct sun lightning -- a kind of mix of dark blue and black.
