Angry Canadian X1 has no Mile/Hr on Speedo... What the?

Hey Canadian X1ers, I just realize something Big tonight.

My speedo doesn't have the mile/hr!!!
I double check twice, and there's only option in the radio to set MLS, but that doesn't do anything on the speedo.
THe manual on page 12 shows an US spec version with Mph in big and km/h in small.
My X1 doesn't have mph gauge at all....

I guess this will be a recall for Canadian X1.
Either program the Live Speed on the digital speedo or change the dash!

HOW can I drive in the US if I don't know the speed I'm going?
Will BMW give me a paper chart to stick on the windshield reminding me the actual speed I'm going?

Is it just me that has this problem?

Is there anyone went to the US with their X1 since they got the car last year?
For folks in the rest of the world, probably this wouldn't apply to you, as Canada and US has different measuring system in terms of speed.

Does this also mean than Germans/French/Spanish X1 drivers can not take their cars to the UK as their dials are the same ? UK spec cars have to have KPH as the inner speed circle to be legal in Europe..

A shame !!! I agree. When travelling in the US I will have to use the GPS to check for the speed ... 1 Mile = 1.6 Km so unless you have a GPS, you will need to be good at converting speed in your mind.

This is annoying because in the states they have "Both" on their speedo. This is not unique to X1 model. Every recent BMW I saw ( 1,3,5,6,x3,x5,x6, etc ) in canada have only the KM/h displayed. This is a shame. Really is.

What kind of ignorance is that of part BMW??!

It has been years and years that car in this country has both km and miles writen on the speedo.
Now I'm risking to get a ticket when traveling to the states because I can't monitor the speed I'm going.

I'm going to the dealer and ask this stupid question.

BMW came back with your suggestion loukas~!

Here's BMW Canada Official reply:

Thank you for contacting BMW Canada. We appreciate your inquiry.

Unfortunately, there is not a part available for Canadian BMW vehicles to show both miles and kilometers on the speedometer. Using a different dash cluster would put the vehicle out of compliance, and cause other technical difficulties with the on board systems.

However, there are a few aftermarket options that may be available to you. You may purchase an aftermarket GPS or navigation system that will display the miles per hour or kilometers per hour, as selected. You may also visit your local auto supply store to see if conversion decals are available to apply directly to your dash.

If you have any further comments, please reply to this email or contact the Customer Interaction Centre at 1-800-567-2691. Again, thank you for contacting BMW Canada.

Manual was written for both U.S. and Canadian owners. But the U.S. stopped their roll out early last year due to supply constraints.

Yup this was my biggest frustration when I got the car last year.

First weekend I had the car, went to NYC...and discovered it was impossible to get MPH ...

This "feature" is not unique to BMW. All german manufacturers don't put MPH on their speedometers. You basically have to guestimate the speed you're going. I have a few speeds that I know for sure what they are (119 kph is 72 mph, as confirmed by my radar detector). Sure it's a pain in the a** but really, the US is one of the only countries in the world that doesn't use the metric system so really in my mind it's their fault. Can't blame BMW for the US's mistake. I'm originally from Winnipeg and I live in the US now so I can tell you how frustrating it can be, but it also gives you an amount of deniability if you're pulled over, simply "but officer my speedometer doesn't have mph and I have to guestimate my speed."

wehave same issue here over the pond. In republic of ireland they converted to KM/H however when you go to northern ireland (part of UK ) its still mph. Total pita when you hire a car from republic and drive north you just have to guess.

Same problem with mainland europe cars when coming into UK you have to guess / estimate. Or hope your car has adigital on dash display good thing mercs haveyou would think BMW would the same. Mercs will display the other speed so if you have km/h they would show mph in middle screen. I think a fail for bmw

Because they are trying to nudge those that are on MPH to the metric system by quietly getting them used to it.

*NEVAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRR! -say the boys in the back LOL

Why US gets it, and we don't.
And yet, not that many American come cross the northern border that often because of our higher cost of living....

If you check some porsche 911 on ebay you will see that porsche has put only Mph on the speedo of US units ...

So I guess BMW is not the only manufacturer to act like this.

It's annoying to say the least ...
