Yeah, I can see how it might for some. Perfectly understandable.

God dude. Taking off in 2nd IS slower than in 1st. No matter HOW you launch.
Get yourself to a track and get a clue

Be honest: Have you tried it? Or do you think you don't have to, because you "know"?

Lots of strong opinion here. Still no one says why they think so. The 35i has high torque at lower rpm than most cars, which to me indicates that it's well suited for launching from 2nd. And indeed, unlike some, I actually have compared the two, and don't just mouth off because I "know" it's slower. And to the best of my experience, it does not appear to be any slower. Certainly not a "profound difference".

Anyhow, others seem to play with launching their BMWs in 2nd too, without getting this vitriol

The reason that taking off in 2nd gear is faster in most BMW's is because of traction issues. RWD cars with no LSD just can't put all the power to the ground without taking off in 2nd gear.

For AWD BMW's, 1st gear is faster. I've extensively tested it at the strip.

I've updated the first post with some more videos of my X1 beating a Cobb tuned WRX, a built drag Camaro SS, and a relatively slow Pontiac GTP. I also beat a Porsche Carrera 997 non-turbo but he was in the other lane so didn't have video.

Thanks for both the explanation, and the videos - much appreciated!

It's at least a full second slower in the first 100 feet. That's my personal experience. Launching an X1 3.5i in first is neck snapping pin-yurazz to the seat fast.
Launching in 2nd...meh.

The WRX completely bogged the launch. It looked like they almost stalled it. I would not count that as a great testament to the X1's speed.

Doesn't matter, a Cobb WRX isn't going to catch a 12.7 in 2900DA even with a perfect launch. Need a STI for that.

My X1 should be about neck and neck with a Cobb Stage 2 STI (downpipe, intake, tune, exhaust), with a great driver who shifts perfectly based on trap and ET. Consider I don't have a downpipe, intake, or exhaust I think that's not bad for a 3900lb luxury SAV.

I would love to see the full list of your improvements.

How many races have you run so far and what is the win:lose ratio? Have you won all of them?

I win most of them but that's just dumb luck on who I get matched up against. There are plenty of faster cars there. I've lost to a built Firebird on drag radials, lost to a few Z06 Corvettes, a built Supra, etc. But standard stuff - WRX's, most Evos (not highly modified ones), G37's, most Mustangs, etc, I beat consistently.

It's not a supercar but the percentage of cars you'll run into on a daily basis that are faster than a tuned X1 is VERY small, especially in real world conditions where AWD and a good automatic gearbox give us huge advantages. A Mustang 5.0 may stay with me on a prepped drag strip, but from a stoplight on a dirty street he has no chance until 100+.

19. They look great, however are VERY heavy. I plan on picking up some lighter 18 inch wheels and tires in the spring, which I expect will give me another 1-2mph in trap speed since I will be shaving nearly 60lbs of unsprung weight.

Obviously my tuned 335d with 500+ ft-lbs is faster when starting in 2nd, but basically ANY AWD car, especially in the 300-400hp range weighing 3800+lbs is fastest starting in 1st. Especially in an automatic.

Our sdrive28i is tuned and has 275 width tires on 9.5" wide wheels out back and it literally doesn't show any signs of traction problems. It is super quick off the line and I would think it's just as fas as AWD considering it weighs less and does not have traction issues.

Anyway, great videos. What a fun car! I wish (sort of) that we bought the 35i.

On Friday I have a downpipe going in. I also installed a BMS intake, though I doubt that had any affect. I am hoping to get down to the track Friday evening to see how she runs, I would just love a 12.5 but I will be happy simply breaking my current record.
