x28i exhaust baffle "golf tee" mod.

UPDATE: DON'T BOTHER - Removing the vacuum line to the exhaust baffle actually does slightly REDUCE the low end torque and there is no improvement in sound (IMHO) SO...I don't recommend this "MOD" that was popular with e46 325's.

Similar to the e46 mufflers with vacuum driven baffle inside the one exhaust pipe. "Assumed" it is there to reduce noise level at certain RPM (or could be used to create back pressure when needed) anyhoo... I decided to pull the vacuum line off to keep the baffle open = both exhaust tips unrestriced.

1) Open trunk, remove storage box on drivers side, locate the plastic valve with two rubber vacuum lines. (black/blue comes from engine into valve, black rubber line goes to exhaust flap valve.

2) Remove black/blue hose by twisting/pulling and insert a golf tee into the line to plug it.

3) Install the storage box...done. I didn't cover the exposed valve port as it is inside the car in enclosed trunk area. Did not test drive it yet to see if there is any big difference in sound or Butt-meter performance.

i did this on mine but did not like the sound. i have it on my N54 and it sounds great but on the N20 it loses its gerr sound. gives it a putt putt sound almost. BTW i just zip tie the hose so its real easy to install and take off. just pinch the hose together and wrap a zip tie around it. easy pizzy lemon squizzy. but let me know what you think of the sound

First road test was inconclusive. I couldn't tell any big sound difference. (It's 24F outside so I wasn't eager to roll down the windows to hear the exhaust)
It seemed the trans shifted faster in Drive mode....felt almost like DS.

UPDATE: from the e46 forums, probably the real reason for the baffle:

"""Nope....keeping one of the exhaust pipes closed increases backpressure, which in turn gives (slightly) greater torque delivery at lower RPMs. (Remember, a 325 needs all the help it can get....it has a dinky little 150 cubic-inch motor pulling 3300 pounds of steel, which ain`t no joke). Wide-open throttle equals low manifold vacuum, which allows that little half-assed flap to open, giving better high-RPM breathing ability."""
