Snow Tires RunFlat

Has anyone installed RunFlat snow tires on their X1 ?

I don't see any on the various retailer websites, and BMW is asking me about 900€ but won't tell me which brand/model they would install !!

Thanks a mil for your help.

Our local dealer is charging about €1600 for the same, although that includes a set of rims as well. Here they offer the Pirelli SottoZeros.

Saying that I have all season tyres on mine and they work just fine in the snow.

Thanks Mario ... Yeah, I did see your street on the other thread !! Impressive.

Let me clarify : BMW is asking 900 for TWO TIRES without rims...
Yes, I think they are trying to milk the cow BIGtime !!

I'll follow your lead and get either 2 R/F winter or 4 all-seasons on Internet and have them installed by my local mechanic. By the end of the lease if I switch for another model I'll just try to sell them on ebay.fr or just bite the bullet.

Thanks a mil.

Gate - not sure what tyres you have but just to say my standard RFT's that the car came with (18's on Y spokes) have performed superbly.

I was debating swapping when the bad weather came but just don't feel the need. We've had over 20 inch of the white stuff here in Sheffield in the last few days.

In the Netherlands the BMW catalogue price is about 1600eur for a set of winter RFT with alloy 17' rims, so 900eur for two without rims seems rather expensive!

Senwar >>> keep in mind mine is a 2WD SDrive...

We got slightly less snow here in Burgundy, but the X1 won't climb the steep street without fishtailing all over the place and if I have to stop uphill, it's back down and J-turn, as it won't move up again.

A bit annoying indeed.
My last RWD was a 2004 Dodge Magnum I drove thru a couple Ontario winters, and with PosiTraction (differential lock) and winter tires, it just never let me down.

I must admit the DTC function is not that impressive on the X1. Not sure it makes a real difference, so I hope winter tires on the rear wheels will !!

Well, I don't want to throw that much money on a lease car... 1800 bucks would buy me a couple of suits in Milan and leave some cash for a night at the Scala !!

I would possibly have 4 winter tires on heavy-duty black steel wheels mounted in order to avoid repetitive desinstall/install on the original tire/wheel combo, but no further.

And damage from snow chains. I used a cheap pair in the USA\Canada a few years ago. They worked well enough but were brutal on the alloys.

Ah right. Sorry, didn't pick that up.

The RWD will definitely make a difference - my mate has one and he said he expects it to pretty much similar to how his 1 series was in the snow - i.e. not brilliant. My 1 series coupe was appalling last year and is the reason I went for the X1 x drive, as couldn't face another bad year.

Saying that, my previous 2 cars had been rwd (Z4 and a Z4MC) that I never even attempted out in the snow!

Good luck with what you decide to do.

Hi Gatekeeper,

Dealer charges 1800 + 18% tax here for the 318 style rims + RFT Dunlop winter tyres. I bought a set of Kumho KW31 winter tyres and they are perfect. Tyres were about 500 Euros. Kumho may sound cheap but I'm extremely happy with them. We're using the same tyres on our other two cars. And to give you an idea, the grip is better than a Bridgestone Blizzak winter tyre on snow.

Hi Mozdal,
Thanks.

FYI, you can get a set of steel wheels with full wheel-covers from BMW for a much better price, and that is if the black wheels really bother you.

These wheels are mounted on the entry-level model in Germany and Benelux.

Mmmm, dont know about plastic covers and snow chains . Think I would run them on the black steel rims.

Thanks Gatekeeper. I also asked for these black steel rims but since the dealer in Turkey is a stealer more than a dealer, they quoted more than 318 rims + dunlop tires for this set They're only offering the 1800+tax price for 318 rims + dunlop rft tires. Idiotic

Sorry Gatekeeper, what I meant was that I do not realy see the point of plastic covers on steel rims shod with winter tyres. I have some experience with chains and unless you buy the very expensive ones they will break the plastic covers in minutes. In fact if you drive through deep snow I don't think the covers will stay on either.

Most ful wheel covers have pretty well securing systems by now.... I mean it'snot like the American cars of the 90s, where by the end of first week on your Caprice B-Body you had already lost 2 hubcaps !!

But I do agree, if using chains the wheel covers are useless.

Hi
I have fitted pirelli sottozero R/F s 3 days ago... Paid around €700 for the set... I guess it would be much cheaper in european countries

I am pretty happy with sottozeros... It's unbelievale but they feel softer and lighter.
snow grip is very well and safe, as well.

yes for 4.
I'm happy that it's a bargain because ı didn't buy them on purpose.
I just called the closest tire store to out office and asked them what they have in stock.
these days most winter tires are sold out here.
