X1 xDrive35i and M235i
We all lament the 3 series and all its kin from being kicked out of Car and Driver's 10 Best. Ok, maybe not lament since the 3 is a shadow of its former self being porky and no steering feel and generally not as fun to drive due to lack of driver involvement. That said, are the current gen X1 xDrive 35i and M235i xDrive the "real" ultimate BMW driving machines? What would you buy for use all year round in all climates? Justification?

Either. But I find the 2er to be an absolute pig with little to no steering feel. It's suffering from the same electric steering as the rest of the lineup. While the X1 does't have the best steering feel, it is marginally better.
I should have waited for the 2 to come out instead of buying the X1 I think. Much faster than an X1. Yeah yeah, you can modify an X1 to your heart's content and it will be fast, but it's still an "SAV". Possibly the only part of the 2 that I really don't like, is the fact that 19" wheels still look grossly small on the car. Other than that, it's a nice little car.

If you don't need any storage room, and you don't mind spending over 50k on a compact car; get the M235. They really aren't comparable to each other. I'd take the money and buy a C7, and a Subie beater for winter.

Both Vehicles
I have driven the 3/4 and 5 series. When u take away the bells and whistles, they really have lost that magic, which I think boils down to driver involvement. I think the X1 and 2 series esp in Msport guise speak more to BMW heritage of smaller high performance vehicles. My "2" sense.

1. Buy whatever new BMW you want in order to get to work
2. Search CL for a $1k E30 3. Spend $1k fixing up E30 4. Enjoy a real BMW without worrying about getting fired because your car keeps breaking down. |
