Thanks for all the replies. You guys are too knowledgeable and creating far too more questions by offering a few more excellent alternatives After thinking it for a night, here's my preference now:
1) used m3 - if I can find the combo I want
2) C7 - if there's no crazy dealer markup
3) 235i - if BMW won't mess that up
4) used Boxster/Cayman - if the right one comes up

Way too many new models coming up in the next few months and hopefully will drive the used cars price down for a bit.
Anyone also considering a sport car in addition to the x1? Or the x1 is sporty enough for most people?

I bought my sports car last April...a 2006 Winning Blue Miata GT with but 31K on the clock.

I put it in the garage and:
tuned it
changed all fluids/filters
upgraded spring/shocks, sways, exhaust
performance alignment
installed Enkei PF01 wheels and ContiDSW tires
Dynamat in boot, doors, floor, rear deck
installed SSK
installed Kenwood Nav
washed, clayed, polished, Lanka'd, and sealed paintwork
polished the glass and installed new wipers

then drove it on weekends if it wasn't raining until 2 weeks ago. My last mod was curtesy of a chunk of concrete. Concrete-1 Miata-0
tore the driver's side floor away from frame rail in 3 spots...UGH!
fixing it this weekend I suppose.
Man, I love working on cars! Nothing more satisfying.
Whatever you decide on will be the RIGHT choice. Have fun shopping.

I would think if you can budget a C7 then a new Boxster is well within reach. Watch out for those options though. P-cars are ridiculously high on the options.

Honda S2000.
Porsche Boxster/Cayman
Or just go have some fun with the X1, you can actually. I even went to the ring with mine, don't think I would have much more fun in a faster car there (the first few laps).

I'm always I'm the market for a project car. I'm looking at mainly mustangs since I've owned one before and regret letting it go

I have owned two Porsche's. a 2001 911 C4 Cabrio and a 2002 911 Turbo
Great cars to lease and not modify.

Terrible to modify or own when older. Great performance, but big $$ to repair, maintain & operate. The Vette (I also owned a 2000 C5 convertible) ran very fast (not just stop lights either, but you need drivers training...) and was WAY cheaper to own and use. My 2 cents....

Good luck. I went the motorcycle route...

A new Boxster/Cayman S with some proper options will probably be at lease a few $k (another $10k more for the bigger engine) more expensive than the Vette. The C7 is basically the most I can afford now.

If you want new, the new C7 looks like a great car for the $$

I already have my sports car but I'm thinking of adding an x1 as my daily. It has the right amount of sport, utility and efficiency at the right price

I've had a nice collection of sports/sporty cars and every single one of them was a completely different experience and quite frankly I wish I could have kept all of them. But if there was one that I had to choose based on price, performance, exclusivity and smiles per miles, it would be the z4m coupe or roadster.

I'll second that. It's why I have both in my stable atm, and have zero plans to let the M go.
