BMW X1 on Sale in Canada. Starting at $38,500
BIMMERPOST NEWS BMW X1 on Sale in Canada. Starting at $38,500 Congrats to our Canadian members as they get a crack at the BMW X1 SAV before our US members. BMW Canada previously confirmed that the X1 will go on sale in Canada this year, and in case you have not yet seen, the X1 configurator has now been online at BMW Canada's website for a few weeks. Currently, the only X1 model available in Canada is the xDrive28i, featuring BMW's all new twinpower turbo 4-cylinder engine (N20), good for 241hp / 258lb-ft torque. Pricing for the X1 xDrive28i starts at $38,500. No word yet on the timing of availability in the US. Why has North America received the X1 later than the European market? Apparently, due to the great demand in all markets in which the X1 has already been introduced, the Leipzig plant at which it is built has been unable to keep up with demand and would be unable to absorb the additional large demand that would come from the US market. Last word from BMW was that the US would not see the X1 until Fall of this year, at the earliest. We certainly hope BMW's X1 production capacity is ramped up so that we can see the X1 hit stateside soon.

Canada is definitely not the first North American market to get the X1. We have had it in Mexico for months in XDrive25i and XDrive28i models.
We also have the 1 series hatch in 120i and 130i forms.

X3 is built in SC, which would let it fall under the NAFTA agreement for Canada/US trading, so I wouldn't expect the disparity to be that large. However, the 3er (same country of origin as the X1) in 328i form here in Canada starts at $41,500, whereas the 3er in the US starts at $34,600. So that makes it about 20% more in Canada. Based off of that, I would expect the X1 to list from somewhere around $30,800 (unless I did my math wrong).

Canadian's should be miffed that new vehicle pricing in Canada is much higher than here in the states. This is despite parity between the Loony and our greenback.

Actually not bad, cheapish I would say, depends on the standard spec though.
I assume that's CAD$? Which makes it around £24k, which is about our base model. Ps: I paid 53k CAD for my moderately specced 2.0d

One final note is that if these prices were directly tied in with the value of said currency as compared to the euro (assuming for german profit), then the prices of all the cars would change daily. |

Wow $48,900
I just priced it out to compare to my fully loaded 2011 328xi Touring and it came to $48,900 prior to freight and PDI (another $2,100)....thanks but not thanks. I would rather have a touring with the smooth inline-6 versus a turbo - even if it is less powerful.
Maybe I lucked out but I paid $50,000 (incl. freight and PDI) for my 2011 328xi touring fully loaded with sport package and NAV (with every available option offered). |

X1
I'm a Canadian working in Thailand ... they make the X1 here in Thailand with cheap labour yet it still costs 2.1 million Thai Baht or equal to $66,560 Canadian. So, it's more expensive by 72%. Ouch.

So $38,500 is $38,500 tx. Which in Ontario is 13% at present ( a lot better than 20% VAT granted). So with tax that is $43,505.

One reason we won't get the X1 for a while is this is by far the biggest market for Mini and the Countryman is selling extremely well. We'll get the X1 by next spring as they finally meet all the demand for the X3 and Countryman. The X1 competes with both so they are being smart by holding off on it.

Not sure why you say the Mini/Countryman competes with the X1? Imho they are very different in all aspects, different classes for that matter. Well in Europe anyway. My very non-scientific comparison: Mini - Tiny city car, I own a Cooper, cost around £18k. Countryman - VW Golf size SUV (-ish), cost around £25k I have driven the Countryman and owned a Golf. BMW X1 - Crossover thats almost the exact same size as a 3-series estate, cost around £34k. I have the 2.0d BMW X3 - SUV thats about the same size as a Q5 and the same size as the first X5, Costs around £40k The prices I mention above are all for a middle/upper range spec with a 1.6 or 2.0l engine. Just for interest, out of the list above and below I still think I have made the best choice, ie Mini for the city and X1 for the longer family journeys. Vehicles I test drove to get to this point: Mini Cooper Mini Cooper S Mini Countryman Cooper S BMW X1 BMW X3 (previous model) BMW 3-series Estate Toyota RAV VW Tiguan VW Passat (previous model) Audi A3 Estate Audi A4 Audi Q5 Merc E-class Coupe Merc E-class Estate

Using the configurator, I priced one out pretty well optioned for mid 40's. In a few months, should be able to get a fully loaded one for low 40's. I wonder if this will be the end of the 3 (Touring)Wagon then. I rarely see a 3touring in Toronto as it is...now that the X1 is out, I doubt they will sell any.

I've read on this website and on the Mini website many people are considering either an X1 or Countryman. I'm considering both, I want good gas milage and to stay in the BMW family. I owned two X3's and went to a Clubman S for better gas milage. To say they don't compete is like saying the X1 won't compete with the X3. I've owned 13 BMW's and one Mini. If the X1 doesn't come out for at least a year I'll get a Countryman S.
