ATF Fluids
I am looking for an alternative ATF for the X1. I am looking at Valvoline and redline in particular. both of these are between $6-$12 a quart.
i have use Valvoline in other with lots of success, 265k no issues. but never on a BMW looking at the datasheet in comparison to lifeguard 8 ( the recommended fluid by the manufacturer ) Lifeguard 8 Viscosity, 26 mm2/s (40°C) Viscosity 5,6 mm2/s (100°C) Pour point <= -42 °C Flash point >= 206 °C Redline Vis @ 40°C, CSt 30.3 Vis @ 100°C, CSt 6.3 Viscosity Index 163 Pour Point, °C -60 Valvoline Maxlife ATF Viscosity @ 40°C, cSt 28.82 Viscosity @ 100°C, cSt 5.91 Viscosity Index 156 Specific Gravity @ 60°F 0.843 Pour Point, °C, -48 Brookfield Viscosity @ -40°C, cP 10200 Flash Point, COC, °C 202 I am no engineer, I actually do not know what any of these number means, but based on my logic, would it be safe to say that we should use Valvoline over Redline? the number are the closest to lifeguard8 fluid anyone expert out there? or anyone with a bit more knowledge ? there is a bunch of forum and video from dodge ram owner using Valvoline as an alternative. they use a similar ZF tranny can we get more feedback about this from bmw owners that have used Valvoline as the alternative fluid? thank you for all those that can respond |

This topic comes up for people to save a buck on a transmission fluid change that is perhaps done every 50k mi or so. Makes no sense why use universal fluids like redline or valvoline when there are specific fluids available for your transmission. Im sure you will still buy the cheap stuff and im not suggesting buy lifeguard but here are few options,
Rowe for 8spd, ravenol, febi.
