I've been driving an X1 for the last few days while my M is having some warranty work performed. Overall I'm not impressed with the X1. Seats are an abomination, auto start/stop might be the worst thing BMW has ever put in a car, steering is vague and stability at speed is questionable. I really expected more from this vehicle and given all of its negatives the price BMW is asking is laughable.

Side note: loaner has ~3K miles on it and shows an average of 20mpg with the 2.8i. Not great considering the M averages 17.5.

Try your M in the snow going up to the mountains with ski gear.
Get back to us.
It is an SAV, yours is a GT (and a nice car BTW!)

Different purposes.
And 20MPG? Must be a computer error. Mine is still breaking in at 2300 miles and has gotten 21 MPG and it is a XDrive35i with the stage 2 Dinan. It got 23 without the Dinan.

Of course a performance car will out handle a SAV. It would be pretty sad if it didn't!

Hope this response helps.

No practice required, you already nailed the jerk part.

Just offering opinions. You decided to attack me personally because I do not particularly care for this vehicle. If all reviews for every car were fantastic we would have nothing to discuss.

I never attacked anyone. You came here to an X1 forum and pissed on our vehicle of choice. Did you expect to be welcomed with open arms?

I am completely shocked you don't like a non m-package, stripper 4 cylinder loaner car. Not.

The x35i m-sport has the sport seats from the 335/135, no start/stop, better suspension, the identical hydraulic steering rack from the 135/335, and a 155mph speed limiter with 285 section 19in summer tires.

... as well as an 80:20 rear:front bias and Performance Control, which dynamically brakes the inner rear wheel when cornering. A very different car from the X-Line 28i.

It's not an M car, but then again, a maxed out X1 35i M-Sport costs 50% less than the most basic M3. Of course you get less for less money - is that a surprise to some?
The OP comes across as "I tried an Isetta, and didn't like it compared to my AMG, so BMWs are not as good as Mercedes".

To the OP: have you driven the F30 328i non sport? I think coming from an e92 m3 to an x1 28i non sport your expectations were a bit off. You really need to set your expectations to a more appropriate level, and if you compared the X1 to some of the modern BMWs, you'll actually realize it's a pretty good driving car.

Case in point - I own an e82 sport package 128i. I owned an e36 m3 5spd before, and an e89 z4 sdrive35iS in between. My impression of the X1 xdrive28i loaner I just returned was pretty positive - the handling was impressive for an SAV and the interior design wasn't bad for a $33k BMW. Compared to the F30 328i, the steering feel as vastly superior (hydraulic vs eps) while the engine and tranny are exactly the same. However, climbing back into my 128i, the sport seats hugged just perfectly, the heavy steering felt right, and the handling was much better. Do I think the X1 is a terrible car? No, in fact I wouldn't mind buying a stripped x1 xdrive28i at some point in the future. The car can seat 4 adults comfortably, the rear storage and lie flat rear seats are great for hauling things, and the hydraulic steering is far and away better than any of the current BMWs with EPS.

Btw - my loaner had 11k miles, and computer showed 20.6 avg mpg. I'm still not a fan of the n20 (the startup noise is horrendous) and I wouldve expected higher MPG. However, it is a loaner so i wouldn't be surprised if ppl were pounding the pedal at any chance they had.

Garage List
This post is funny. Why do people compare apples to jet engines? People buy the X1 for many different reasons than people buy M3/5/6.

20 mpg tells me it's a loaner and people are beating the snot out of it. I drive my 28i from Calgary to Vancouver and back and averaged 27.6 mpg. That's with less than 300 kms start point.

The auto start/stop is off on mine. I don't even have to push the button, It's not nearly as bad as people make it out to be.

And lastly, my sports seats with leather are quite comfortable. Maybe not the best ever, but I paid $50K, not $125K.

I'm on my 15th BMW if you include a used one I bought which includes 3 M3's and I must say you are clueless! I could go thru each point but it would be a waste of time since you statement was idiotic.

I've been driving an M3 for the last few days while my sport bike is having some warranty work performed. Overall I'm not impressed with the M3. The front end is ridiculously heavy; I can't get the front wheels off the ground even if I pop the clutch. Steering is vague and stability at triple digit speed is questionable when trying to lane split. I really expected more from this vehicle and given all of its negatives the price BMW is asking is laughable.

Side note: loaner has ~3K miles on it and shows an average of 17.5mpg. Not great considering the sport bike averages 40.

Not particularly the level of response I was anticipating from this thread, but I guess a bit understandable given the majority of you are X1 owner's and not just fans. To be fair, I was actually looking forward to driving the X1 given some of the more positive reviews by the press after its launch. The X1 was also on my radar lately because I have been considering picking up a wagon as a DD to keep miles off the M. Regardless, I can see how most would think I am directly comparing the two models. Quite the opposite in fact. I was purely looking at the X1 as a total package, and frankly expected more from BMW. One poster mentioned the sport seats offer much better support. I would be interested to try these as the standard seats are my main point of contention.

Cheers fellas ....didn't mean to piss in your corn flakes.

Haha, I guess I don't see the initial post as worthy of the dog pile. Sounds like OP drove a 28i sDrive with few options. The current reality of BMW is that outside of the M cars you have to be pretty savvy with the options if you want a sporty car.

If you drove an sDrive, it had EPS. Try an xDrive, which is where the praise for the hydraulic steering is coming from. The Sport or M Sport models will likely provide a better experience too. It's based very closely on the E91 chassis, so ultimately, dynamics should feel relatively similar to your E9x, albeit without the M specific suspension bits or the purity of rwd.

For me, it's a good compromise. It's the only way to get a five door BMW with the N55, it can get decent mileage (just like an E9x M can get single digit mileage) and it's more practical than our previous 135i. For my wife, it's a great car, I would not have bought it for myself, but as a car in the garage, it's nearly perfect.

I got the same impression, loaner was an sDrive without sport seats (and maybe even leatherette).

"The price they are asking is laughable", its the cheapest BMW and have you looked at the base of the new 428 at $46k now that is laughable. The guys with X drive are so jealous when the S drive blow by them so they have to resort to the hydraulic steering argument. Caddy ATS has electric steering with much better feel than 3 series actually best in class and besides other BMW's have electric so why do you drive BMW's if the brand sucks so bad with electric steering. I don't get the whole electric steering vs hydraulic argument since I drive a E93 and don't feel much difference and yes my 335 will beat your X1 35's 0-60. If I wanted X drive I would have bought X drive. I prefer lighter and better handling, faster S drive.

No it won't

Might beat most of them, but not mine! And there is no sdrive X1 on earth that is faster than my xdrive.

That is a pretty ridiculous statement considering that s drive is cheaper. Every single xdrive owner could have afforded S drive but chose not to get it. Nothing to be jealous about at all. There are no S drive X1's faster than my X drive, and in the winter or in the rain there are no S drive X1's faster than any X drive X1's.
