Are you using regular gas by chance?

When deciding between the 28i and 35i I was torn because of supposed gas mileage. In my 35i I wind up getting about 25mpg on the highway and 18mpg city.

My girlfriend just got a f30 328xi which has the same engine and transmission as the x1 28i...I drove it for a weekend while she's out of town and you know what, I'm SO glad I got the 35i. On the highway I can get 26-27mpg, but in town I can only get around 17-18mpg - identical to my 35i. The reason is, the 28i engine is down in power so much to the 6 cylinder that I feel like I constantly have to floor it to get any acceleration. The instant torque of the 35i allows me to drive quickly and decisively without pressing the throttle to the floor, which results in equivalent city mileage for me.

Is the 28i capable of better mileage than the 35i? Absolutely. Does it get better mileage the way I drive? Absolutely not. Just something to think about. I know I'm never going to change my driving style - if I did, I would get a Toyota or something.

Europe was 100% premium (equivalent to our AKI 91 I think).

US has been all 91 premium except for this return trip from VT skiing where I was near empty and the small town station only had 87 regular that day.

There seemed to be no difference in the engine performance - no knocks, no degradation in performance from before versus after (in eco mode). The lack of any difference in the mileage is also interesting. Both are poor, but still is the same.

It's almost saying to me that no matter how fun, spirited and hot footed I drive in sport mode versus dogging it in un-fun fashion in eco mode - and no matter premium versus regular - I'm stuck on the poor end of only 20.x mpg. And that with max inflated tires.

Does everyone else see the same instanteous mpg needle diving to below 12mpg when they step on the gas pedal below 50% down when in eco mode?

Am I spoiled by the torque of diesel? Am I just hot footed? I swear I was dogging it - to the point of almost getting in accidents since the car would not pull out into traffic fast enough in eco mode (takes stepping on the gas pedal to the 65% point to get the car to move into traffic). Same for you?

Note for the Hwy test, average speed was 48.3 MPH, so they're probably running it around 55 mph.

Also another decent article on Edmunds about rated mpg.

http://www.edmunds.com/fuel-economy/...a-ratings.html
Thanks for those links!
If you look at the Detailed Comparison tab on the .gov site, you see that the max speed in the highway test is 60 mph. You also see that the max acceleration in the City and Highway test is 3.2 - 3.3 mph/sec (or 0-60 in 18 seconds!! )

OF COURSE you'll get great mileage if you never go over 60 mph or accelerate faster than an 18 second 0-60!

I wouldn't be surprised if Eco Pro mode is designed to provide max acceleration of around that same value. I also think the throttle response on the X1 is very non-linear to game the system a bit. It's very gentle up to about 50-60% and gets much more aggressive at that point. You can see this, as others have said, by watching the throttle position indicator... er, I mean the Instantaneous Fuel Economy needle.

I just drove from Rochester to Miami. O.o I averaged 27 to 29 mph per tank of gas. Resetting the trip computer each time I filled up. Xdrive 28i. This is without Eco Pro on. 93 gas. And me pushing 80 as much as I could. I am basically pleased. I figure if I kept it at 70 I'd easily be able to bump that to over 33 and probably get the sticker (34?) if not very close.

The car is definitely past its break in miles now. Lol I'm eager to see if it will get any better on the way back. At this point I don't feel the need to even try out the Eco Pro...

I didn't get one of those needles in the 35i. Don't guess it really would have mattered though.

The MPG needle in the 28i is oil temp in the 35i, right?

I guess. It drives me crazy that I don't have a temp gauge!!

I always let my cars get warm first, before I warm myself with the heat cranked on high.

On the 2.8 X1 - I have *NO* idea when the engine is warm or cold.

It's not even in the Vehicle Status display!! Poor job BMW and way to cheap out. Even my old cheap VW can afford the temp sensor and share it's feedback to the driver.

Sounds like the US folk need to start getting diesels over there as your starting to focus more on economy/efficiency . I've been a little bit disappointed with the MPG I get (euro MPG) but even around town it still returns no less than 35MPG . Not sure what that would equate to in US gallons.
On the motorway at around 70MPH it returns 48MPG+. This is for the 177BHP 2.0 4WD xDrive diesel by the way.

I think a 3.0 diesel X1 could quite popular in the US?

The term MPG is Miles per Gallon. So the number of Miles driven per Gallon of fuel used should pretty much directly correlate I think ? (aren't you doing kilos and liters)

When our fuel prices get to where Super 91/93 oct is at or above the price of diesel then it becomes more feasible. But most of the time it's not that way. Super is cheaper by several cents. (although oil going back up in price again)

On the last tank on my 28i the computer showed 28.6 MPG while figuring it manually it came out to 27.8 MPG. This was running it in Eco Mode with auto start/stop disabled for almost the entire tank. The driving was about 70/30 highway/city trips to and from work about 25 miles each way with some slow downs for traffic but not a lot.

The Imperial gallon is 20% larger than the US gallon. So I believe you need to multiply euro MPG by 0.8 to get US MPG and divide US gallon by 0.8 to get euro MPG.

My average speed is between 60-75. I don't know the RPM's. I tend to pay more attention to the MPG needle. I try to keep it between the 30-50 range. My previous daily driver was a Honda CR-Z hybrid so I am still getting adjusted to the 28i.

Cool enough.

I think it's going to be helpful if we know around the speed driven for posted mpg.

Like Sammy Hagar - I can't drive 55

Oooo....reasons to go minimally optioned 35i vs fairly well optioned 28i are starting to tip the scale. My MCS doesn't have an oil temp gauge and it drives me nuts to have to fork out a few hundred bucks to install one myself.

I watched the RPM needle yesterday on the way to work and keeping the MPG gauge between 40-50 and a cruising speed of around 65-70 my RPM's were pretty steady at 1750.

As far as the auto start/stop goes I have not been impressed with it on the 28i compared to my experience with the CR-Z, that's why I don't use it. The CR-Z was very smooth and barely noticeable where as you definitely feel it every time in the 28i. I assume this may have to do with how the hybrid engine restarts vs a conventional engine.

An update for anyone interested. My previous tank is quoted above. I topped off this morning and the computer showed 29.7 MPG while figuring it manually it came out to 28.7 MPG. I used Eco Mode with start/stop off again and the trips were the same. RPM's were around 1750 when cruising and the MPG meter was between 35-50. My average highway speeds were between 60-75 MPH.
