Manual 23d Xdrive
Hi ... new here from Australia ... and looking to buy an X1. My dealer can source a manual which has lots of appeal, but they don't have a manual demo. Is there anyone who has a manual 23d who can tell me how they feel about the clutch and gear shift?
For example, is the clutch action light, and is the shift a short or long throw, as well as general clutch behabviour (hard or easy to stall etc.) Also does the cruise control cut out when the clutch is depressed? Would appreciate any feedback, even from non 23d manual owners, as I guess the transmission may be similar? Thanks in advance ....... Dan |

Hi Danintas and welcome aboard...
Well, strange question... You don't stall with any type of clutch which is working properly, you just get used to the play and adapt your own sync.. Do you actually have any experience at all with a standard, or would the X1 be your first shot at it ? Anyway, it's German so it's rather firm and catches quick with a short play. Nothing different from most European cars really... I didn't even know the 23d was available with a standard...

Thanks for the reply Gatekeeper ... most of the cars I've owned have been manuals. I understand the manual has only just become available for the 23d.
My dealer though did manage to find a manual 20d for me to drive ... the clutch action and gear shift were good; what wasn't so good though (for my extra wide feet) was the lack of foot room and the RHD Australian models appear to have the pedals somewhat offset to the right. I've decided to stick with my decision to buy an X1, but will definitely opt for the auto. Cheers ....... Dan Last edited by danintas; 03-02-2011 at 04:25 AM.. Reason: bad spelling |

I have the auto on my 2.0d (my first auto) and have never regretted it.

I'm probably too used to my Focus's toe-light clutch and gearbox, but when I test drove my friend's new 320d manual a few years ago I thought - why put yourself through this torture? One gets used to a car but I found the clutch too catchy and the gearshift too notchy.

Can't tell for the X1 though.. Our Commonwealth members have not really brought it up as far as I can tell. Auto is a good choice though. Wouldve taken 20d auto myself had I had some say in the matter.

Thanks for your replies ... I ordered yesterday a car which had been unallcoated from a mid February build. It's an auto Cashmere 23d with black leather, sunroof, electric sports seats, 18" 5 spoke wheels, performance control, xenon and adaptive headlights, professional nav, upgraded hi-fi and a few other minor things.
Wil hopefully take delivery mid to late April |

Its a car thats in the build queue but has not been sold (ie allocated to a buyer) yet. Also happens when a buyer cancels an order.
