Interior Lighting, No Covers?

Just noticed that the rear interior lights about the passengers outside shoulders have no covers over the bulb area. Same for two of the front overhead lights, iirc.

Can anyone confirm this is correct? You can reach up into the socket and touch the bulb. No covers over them...

Is this BMW just being cheap? Or are the bulbs LED so they don't get hot enough to burn a child's finger if they reached up and touched it?

I believe that's only on the m sport. The oem bulbs are normal incadesent. The led upgrade from bmw is about $100.

I think it has more to do with the lighting package. I'm pretty sure all my bulbs are LED inside.

I replaced all interior bulbs that were not LED. The overhead console has the following:

My 2014 doesn't have LED interior reading/map lights (I have the Lighting Package too). I noticed the lack of a cover on those rear reading lights awhile back...I found out the hard way by burning my finger!! Those suckers get so HOT so QUICKLY. Seems like a bit of an oversight to me.

My 2014 does not have covers and they are not led either. I'm thinking about getting the led kit from BMW as soon as I can find a good deal (if I can).

Same. Can someone post a pic of the uncovered ones? Seems weird!

So I deeply investigated my car today. I have covers. No LEDs. But I do have covers on my June built 2014 sport line. I guess it sucks to be Murican.

Lighting package was default on my MY2014 X1 and the rear reading lights do have a hole in it. I haven't put my finger in it to see how hot it gets but will do and find out.. never thought it could be harzardous.

Are you sure all 10 LEDs fit in our X1s? Online reviews say this is a generic kit (not specific to any one BMW model) so for example the E46 owners were pissed because only 6 of the LED bulbs fit their cars and the other 4 couldn't be used ($100 for 6 bulbs ouch). How many in the kit fit in the X1?

When I picked mine up, I was just about to drive off when I noticed that. I got the salesman back out and he confirmed that was correct.

With lighting package and sunroof my setup is:

3 x 194 Wedge - FRONT DOME/MAP (round bulb)
2 x 194 Wedge - REAR MAP (round bulb)
2 x 194 Wedge - REAR DOME (flat)
1 x 194 Wedge - TRUNK (flat)
2 x LED Module - FOOTWELL (LED MODULE) - no need to replace
2 x 41x11mm Festoon - VISOR/VANITY
1 x 37x11mm Festoon - GLOVE

I used eight of the set (5 round and 3 flat bulbs) so I have two spares left. Also I needed to buy three more aftermarket festoon type for the visors and the glove box. Without sunroof I think there will be one more left.

I agree not cheep but I don't like the ebay led bulbs and modules and scared of sometimes being advertised as "can bus bulbs". God forbid if there's resistors embedded in them. For the festoon types and didn't have OEM option (discontinued) so I had to purchase from ebay.

What year is yours and are your bulbs incandescent or LED?

I wonder if we need to add a poll to this thread, so everyone can indicate model year and cover/no cover and maybe bulb type or trim/option or sheesh even country/market. So far I can't find any hard and fast rules or rhyme or reason for these variances and a nice table might reveal a pattern. This smells an awful lot like cost cutting to me though I would think designing and tooling for a revised reading light isn't cheap either (unless they it's the same part just missing the lens).

I won't be able to add my own data point until a few more days from now.

Great post, thanks for the detail about specific bulb locations. Where did you buy the additional bulbs needed for the vanity, etc?
