No-Charge Maintenance: Spark Plugs & Fuel Filter

Hi all,

Anyone got their dealership to replace the spark plugs & fuel filter under the No Charge Maintenance plan?
If you did, how did you initiate it as I don't think these are in the CBS. However my service warranty book indicates Spark Plug replacement however no mileage was provided.

I enabled the service reminder via coding and the dealership honored it. It is set at every 30k miles.

Is that something that can be done via Carly or has to be via computer?

Coding intrigues me but neither time nor interest affords me to explore this.

I guess I'll go with option B. Have my wife flash her pretty almond eyes and request for them in the next service.

There are a few guys who will do it for you remotely at a reasonable cost... Look into it if you're interested.

I just want BMW to take care of it under their No Charge Maintenance. $0 outlay. Paying someone to code the car kinda defeats the purpose. I might as well change the plugs myself which is real easy compared to my my RX8, WRX boxer and the mazda6 v6 that requires removal of the TB,manifold and gaskets.

Yeah they ain't going to replace the fuel filter for you, it's a "lifetime" device.
The fuel regulator/filter is tied together as one unit. Runs about $140 USD if your curious.

Changing the oil involves resetting the CBS with Tool32 adding arguments to the CBS_reset script. I think that procedure is required at every oil change. I haven't done it and not planning on doing it.

Do you have a 28i or 35i?

My dealer insisted the plugs were free @ 45k on my 35i, and sure enough, they replaced them around 45k when I brought it in for a replacement radiator under warranty.

As long as the CBS states a service is due within 3k miles, I believe they just go ahead and do it even if the car isn't specifically there for that reason.

Interesting... Just scheduled my next appointment. Didn't realise the sparkplugs are included as it's not showing up in my iDrive. But sure enough they're coming up in 3500 km.
Except that I was told they don't do it unless it's within 2000 km (more than double the 3000mi you stated).

Wondering if another dealership will give me a different figure...

3000 miles is the figure I've heard as well. Dealerships may claim to honor it differently, but they are able to be reimbursed by BMW NA if it's within 3k miles of being due.

How many kms do you have?

I'll find out next week...

plug change

on my s28 my SA said the plugs are due at 60k miles. I bought a thin walled socket and watched a youtube video. It is the easiest plug change I have ever done. Once you have the plastic off the engine cover and area behind it is 30 minutes.

70,000 kms

And yeah I know, I did it on my friends N54 engine, which was a pain because the last cylinder was hard to get to. With our 4 cylinders that shouldn't be the case.

Just an update. My dealership is informed me that spark plugs are scheduled to be replaced in 80k km or 4 years. Since I am at 57k km and 3 years, they cannot roll this into the No Charge Maintenance. Alternatively, I pay out of the pocket which is $326. I said no thanks.
Might revisit this when my x1 is nearing its 4 year warranty expiration or just DIY it.

For what it's worth, the plugs on my 35i had perfect gap even at 45k. I wouldn't worry about it, it's not really needed but nice to get as a freebie. Just wait until they're free and enjoy.
