Slight feather on tires

We have a little more than 2k on the car; did my 'run my hand over the tread' on the front tires; I can feel a slight feather forming.
Does this indicate an alignment problem, or is it normal? We don't lack for twisty roads around here.
Also, what is the recommendation for tire rotation? Front to rear, X'd, and how?
Thanks,
Moon

I'm no EXPERT but it's always been my understanding that excessive front toe-in will cause equal feathering on the outside of both front tires. Toe-out will affect the inside edges. Abnormal wear to a single tire is usually attributed to too much pos. or neg. camber. Your alignment is likely off a little. Potholes and curbs will take their toll on alignment long before they damage a wheel or tire.
FWIW,
I recently had my tires balanced because of some slight shimmy. When the tech found some suspect wear he recommended an alignment. When checked, he found the following:

Even though it was tracking straight and there was no pull, it was out. All is good now.

We're headed out of town before there'd be time to have it checked; is alignment part of the 'full maintenance' offered on the BMW?
I may check with another dealer out of town.
Thanks for the detailed comeback; I normally get all of our cars aligned once a year after pothole season.

Unfortunately, alignment services are not included.
