Retrofit rear view camera

Hello friends,

I asked my dealer and the official rear camera retrofit is about USD 3,000

Do any of you tried the "unofficials" retrofits?

I saw this on ebay http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item...obalID=EBAY-US

It's not about a camera. It's about unlocking your radio.

here is the list of questions
1. What kind of radio do you have. iDrive?
2. Does it have video connection? Where?
3. Where reverse input is located? Is it already connected to the reverse signal?
4. How to unlock the radio? Does NCS Expert support it? Check with local indie shops if they can do an unlock for you.

If you don't have (or want) iDrive and don't want to spend a bundle of cash, then the question is whether an inexpensive wireless backup camera is a better solution. Here is a posting on this topic from an E90 forum: http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=640489. I'm thinking of a even simpler solution for my X1, a Peak PKC0RB Wireless Back-Up Camera System -- does anyone have an idea of how tricky it would be to wire the camera (it only draws a tiny amperage) from the liftgate to a backup light in the side panel?

My friends, I already have iDrive and rear parking sensors too... I think the official retrofit requires a new module, the camera itself, wires and coding.

Then it is up to you which way to go.
Cheapest:
- get new/used module from ebay. Try German ebay - cheaper and better selection;
- Assuming the module has RCA in - get a camera from ebay/amazon;
- Learn coding with NCSExpert. Update VO for your vehicle.

Since the vehicle is relatively new I doubt there is an aftermarket module/adapter for video connection. If you do find one let us know.

Thank you nospam, but seller doesn't offer products for X1

Hello xyz100, I found a pdc camera interface on ebay.de with this description:

Hallo verkaufe hier ein PDC Steuergerät (Rückfahrkamera),

Auktionsinhalt: - BMW PDC

Zustand : gebraucht, voll Funktionsfähig

Teilenummer : 66.20 - 9225 822
Passend für folgendes Model:

E84
--------------------------////---------

Price is fine (130 eur inc shipping) but item number on realoem says "for cars until
2009", so maybe this doesnt work for my 2013? Seller says this works with any year X1

I just checked the ETK Parts Directory. It looks like it fits many X1 models. However it does not show to fit N20 equipped X1. But for some reason it shows as equipment for i35X for US market. No i28. The only i28 shown is with N52 engine. And off course bunch of 18d, 18i, 20d, 23d.

PDC stands for Park Distance Control. In the diagram it shows only the module and two ultrasonic converters - one for the front and another one for the back. No rear view camera in the diagram. The square module appears to have three connectors on the side. So I am not sure it is for the rear view camera.

The new Consumer Reports review says the same thing - a $40K car should come with a backup camera (just as a $20K Kia does). I'll be trying out a cheap wireless camera on my X1 when it arrives... Anyone else take this route?

That's silly. The $40k buys you a lot of other stuff, presumably more important to the BMW buyer, like twin turbo and high torque across the entire rpm range.

What options you want depends on both how the car is going to be used as well as your own preferences. There's not One Sanctioned Spec that says what extras should always be included. And thank goodness for that. If I want to spend $20k extra on a beefier engine and suspension, and forgo a backup camera, shouldn't that be my choice?

FWIW, I have the backup camera, but it's nearly as useless to me as being able to dock an iPhone. Unfortunately, I couldn't deselect either without losing other things I wanted. Let those who wants extras pay for them - don't demand them by default, or bundle them in with unrelated things.
In my opinion, the BMW X1 isn't a la carte enough, while CR seems to think it's bad that you have the choice to not get something? I don't get it.

My wife was initially not confident about reversing without the camera, but now is very confident with the rear PDC, and happy.

A new front bumper is apparently required for front PDC, plus idrive, and camera, this is why the retrofit is so expensive.

The cost is what it is, I am personally comfortable with the price I paid to get the BMW, not a Hyundai etc. I paid Australian $59'000 for a demo model with a retail price of about $72k. So a camera would have been nice, but everything else makes up for the lack of the camera.

My quote doesn't include front bumper nor idrive. I already have idrive.

It's ok now, I think I am a "Geek" and I want every single piece of technology ... right now my X1 2013 is in "surgery" retrofitting official xenon headlights ...tomorrow will be ready to shine!

Me dealer told me yesterday "you are such a crazy guy...now that you'll have xenons..will you retrofit adaptive headlights?

...I promise you, me next BMW (X4 or X6) will have everything I need
