iPhone Integration with 2012 X1 models

For those of you guys who recently got delivery of your MY 2012 X1s in Canada and had the Smartphone integration option,

Did you get the iphone adapter cradle with the car or did you need to purchase it separately?

I've read around that you need that for FULL integration between the iphone and the iDrive system?

In Europe the cradle is always separate as its phone specific.

It's quite expensive but there are always loads on eBay here for the slightly older phones. I used a 4 year old Nokia and just leave it permanently in the car.

I think we are mixing up "cradle" and "adapter". The cradle does come with the car, but the adapter that snaps into the cradle, is smartphone-specific and must be purchased separately.

Hi Guys, Hate to ask a dumb question but how come you are talking about a 2012 model when it is only the year 2011! Am I missing something or are you fellows in a time warp?

The model year is pretty subjective in North America. I've seen some next year models pretty early in the previous year. The year is not dependent on when it is manufactured.

In the case of the X1, it started to be delivered in May and I was told that aren't going to be any big changes in the fall, so it made sense just to go with 2012 rather than 2011 for just a few months.

Sorry, they call the "adapter" the "cradle" here.

Same here. BMW takes a factory break, around the beginning October I think, during which any tooling changes or model updates generally take place. From about mid-October builds onwards the cars are sold as 2012MY but its largely symantic.

The factory break is in August, so all the new goodies and engineering changes become available in September. They also like to make changes in March as well.

You can get it from GetBMWParts.com

They have it for 245 USD shipped.

Local dealer has it at 286 CAD + taxes here in Canada...

Thats very, very expensive. Costs around £75 here or US$125 incl taxes.

Seems strange though as most things are dearer here.

If those prices from GetBMWParts are correct I would suggest you order the "adapter" from a UK dealer.

PS: Also loads available at that price on ebay.co.uk

Maybe I'm mixing up cradle vs. adapter. But in any event, the thingee that the phone snaps into is the expensive part, phone specific and even has several types.

I'm not really sure. The dealer paired up the phone when we took delivery, but whether it is "needed" I don't know. I'm thinking why not.....?

Yes, it still connects via BT. Older phones still have a hardwired connection to the external aerial. Newer ones use a induction coil or something.

I'm still on the fence with this one. I have an iphone4, the wife an iphone3GS, so actually we'd need two!! So that's £150. Signal boost via the areal would be handy but until we have the same phone then I doubt we'd spend the cash.

Or wait for the iphone5 in Sept Adapter prices on ebay fall hugely when a new model comes out. I got one for £20 for my older Nokia.

It will take quite a while before an iPhone 5 one is available, unfortunately. The 4 wasn't available until April of this year.
