Does the X1 have sun compensation in the AC?
Since we've finally had some warm, sunny weather here in Westsylvania, I've noticed that it's necessary to turn the AC temp down to keep the interior cool.
I've experimented with various settings, tho' 'auto' seems the best. Question being, does the X1's system have automatic compensation for heavy sun load? Hate to mention another German brand, but my bride's A4 compensates for sunload very well, and it isn't necessary to adjust the temp to be comfortable. What I really need to know is , 'do I have a sensor out to lunch, or is my AC working as expected?' Thanks, Moon |

If I like it colder, I just twist drivers knob a few degrees, and/or push fan button which has 7 settings. The hardest part is when you want cool flow through air that's 68 degrees outside you need to turn temp down to 60 deg. Then, when you push AC button because outside is over 70 degrees, you have to turn temp up to about 70-75. |

According to RealOEM the X1 DOES have a solar sensor. Its the little plastic bit sticking up in the center of the dash. I've noticed that when on auto mode my X1 does a great job of varying the fan speed to compensate for outside temperature vs interior temperature as well as direct sunlight. My E38 740iL was the first car I owned that had this feature and it also worked well.

Thanks, Scott, just the info I needed. I'm not adverse to manually adjusting the temp, but if it's supposed to be automatic, then let it be so.
It is a nice feature, and it was really easy to get used to in her ladyship's panzer. I'll have to check with my dealer, Moon |

Just a nickname, Red! Don't get excited. We are mighty pleased with it, and I might well have bought a new A3 if they were still a hatch.
No argument from me about the 'RS6', and we're Avant fans...don't know why they sell poorly here. Moon |

I find the X1 A/C anemic, at best. I had mine examined last year at the dealer because of my complaints. I've had other cars where the a/c blasts frigid air and cools down the interior on the hottest of days. Not so for the X1 - forget about using the Auto feature, I have to turn down to 60 degrees and Max AC and it still takes several minutes for the interior to cool down.

Perhaps it bears checking indeed; again, with the Audi, we set it and forget it yearound. The X1 seems to cool the interior adequately, but there is some fooking about before it happens.

I have found the climate control on my X1 to be quite incompetent. It will adapt for sunlight in the summer by raising the fan speed, but it doesn't compensate for humidity. It is very bad when outside temperatures are fairly close to the requested temp as it randomly alternates between freeze and cook as if my ex gf is working the thermostat. Worst of all is a cold but sunny day, in which the car assumes I wanted to be cooked to medium rare even with the thermostat down all the way to 62F. Of course dropping below 62F puts on the MAX AC mode...
In other words, it's far from "set it and forget it" for me too. |

Perhaps humidity plays more of a role in the effectiveness of the X1's AC. It isn't particularly humid here in Northern California and I have no complaints so far with leaving in auto mode. I do need to get windows tinted though...so much glass in this vehicle.

FWIW, The Solar Sensor in the E9X (on which the X1 is based)...
Sunlight Adaptation (solar sensor) How the solar sensor affects the IHKA regulation on the driver's side and on the front passenger side is not programmed separately. The following functions are modified when automatic mode is activated (depending on the intensity of sunlight): • Blower output is increased or reduced • Desired temperature value is increased or reduced I think, at best it is rudimentary when it comes to compensation due to solar gain or loss... |

I recently had my windows tinted - $250 for a 35% tint, which is the legal limit in NC. My A/C works nicely, especially since the tint. A noticeable improvement. The real test will be in July when the humid weather takes over.

No problems here in Florida ... seems to work very well. I do adjust the temp based on the environment, but overall it works really well.
