Noisy X1 xDrive 23d

My wife has had her X1 for two months now, done around 1200km. Every time I drive it I am annoyed by the noisy diesel. I have driven many diesels, BMW, Audi, Peugeot, but none has been as noisy as this. In particular, there is a very raspy noise when accelerating even mildly. BMW claim there is nothing wrong, but I find it quite irritating. could it simply be a lack of refinement with these low end models?

I am curious about other's thoughts on this engine in the X1.

I think this comes down to your expectation.

I have a xDrive20d and I enjoy the sound of the engine. It is a little raspy but certainly not annoying, I quite like the sound. It doesn't in my mind sound like a conventional diesel engine at all.

I've had my car for 10 weeks and I find that it is just a magnificent car for touring in fact I've done 10,000 km in this time, just a tad more than your wife.

Enjoy both your cars.

I agree, still waiting for my X1 but I don't think it sounds like the other diesels I have test driven (Audi Q5, VW Tiguan). It actually sounds a bit like my 2.0l Golf, same type of growl. Just my opinion though.

I think its just because the 23d is a sport model and usually bmw makes the sport models a bit louder the normal

I too like the roar, but I miss the extra two speeds in the auto for longer journeys on higways...
