Battery Replacement

After 95K miles and 8 years, time for a new battery!

Have all the tools/software to change, register, etc. new one, but are there any other memory loss or module reprograming I need to do in addition to replacement and registration?

I've heard that some folks will keep a trickle charge or even hook up another battery to the posts under the hood to maintain 12V to the car... Is this necessary?

Thanks

You will need to set the time and date, but other than that I don't see any issue when replacing a new battery as long as your register it.

I have to disconnect my 14 X1 many times during the year. The worst that can happen is it can throw some codes having to do with vanos, etc not shutting down, yet.

Most vids say to not try to jump power when changing battery. You can mess up computer, etc.

I also have the 8 year battery with 1/3 of your miles. I used to sell batteries, and noticed that mileage of use can use up battery, not just time in car. My battery sits around 12.0 volts when sitting for nearly a week. I have to catch a friends house to charge occasionally since I live in apartment.

I would advise against keeping 12v to the car as well when you disconnect the battery. People have required a new FRM after doing that before, whether by doing it improperly or some issue with the car, hard to tell. But no risk in swapping a batter as one normally does. Very simple.

So Update

Replaced battery and registered it with Bimmerlink App.

Only had to set time, everything else was fine. Battery was $180 for a AGM Platinum Diehard Group 94R from Sams Club. (Fresh Battery, dated april 2021)

App was $40. Already had the BT Dongle. Dealer wanted over $500.

My X1 s28i 2014 has it's 8 year battery on 36k miles. My plan when I need one is Diehard at Sam's club for $179 and will register with my Foxwell NT elite 510 for $129.

I watch voltage in real time on my Scanguage, so will get a pretty good hint when it goes downhill.

A local indy shop wanted $400 for a new Interstate battery + reprogramming. And they said that Interstate batteries are rebranded Varta OEM batteries. So I went to Costco and got an Interstate H7 94R AGM for $190 and registered the battery myself with the Carly app, which I've had for years and has paid for itself several times over.

Curious. What else have you done with the Icarly app/module? I've bee debating getting one for a while, but it's $133 and I wasn't really sure what I would need it for, could use it for.

If you are looking for an app, I would go bimmercode.

I have previously been doing inpa/bmw tools, then moved to rheingold/Ista+, now I'm using bimmercode, and its incredibly powerful and simple.

I know a lot of people are a bit worried with VO programing etc w/an app, but so far I've done a lot and no issues.

It can do diagnostics/code reading, basic coding, but unlike carly it can do things like edit VO. You would need this for actually adding features like Idrive, Sport brakes (SPBR), Heated seats/sport seats, or Manual swap, etc.

So far I've done
VO code seat swap
VO code SPBR
Change coding for key to roll windows up/down
fogs on w/high beams
digital dash speedometer
code out LED warnings for fogs/turn signals

Overall, super happy with it.
