E90 vs E84 door seals, wind noise fix?

Hey everyone.

I have been working on quieting my 15 x1 down for a while now, and did a lot of work, but still have this roaring wind noise at 75mph. The thing is, I also have an E90 which is considerably quieter. Putting a lot of time into looking at the differences, the main things are the mirrors are much smaller, and there is a double seal on each door, vs a single one on the e84.

Just seeing if anyone else has tried something like this, retrofiting or making their own gaskets. I have already measured, about 1" wide and 3/8" thick would cover most of it.

The other option I'm looking at is getting oem e90 gaskets to retrofit. I measured everything and its incredibly close. Not exact, but within 1/2" to 1" around the whole door.

The other issue is, the e90 has a different black trim around the upper portion of the door to hold the seal (portion that also includes speaker) which I may need to retrofit.

Any input would be appreciated. I have also used another X3 thread as a guide, including lubing seals, doing noise mat in doors and hatch, as well as material in A-pillar so far. Huge difference.

E90 Doors, note the two seals, one body one door.

e84 doors, note single seal. *doesn't come up on real oem for e84, This door design is very, very similar to an f30 btw.

I installed these today.

I tried putting the E90 window trim, liner things in, they are so, so close, but can't get them to fit nicely enough for OEM like fitment. These are the pieces which hold the tweeters up front.

The E90 front door seals do indeed fit the E84 door, otherwise. I matched the routing of the e90, but on the front side of the door its different, so you need to follow the sheet metal.

I also installed seals on the front edge of the rear door. I want to try F48 seals since they seem a better fit, but currenlty running some from a JY off an infinity.

Overall, these worked as I hoped, lowering about 1-2 decibels interior at 75mph.

I have been testing my mods with my decimeter and this is one of the better ones.

Cheers.

Yea, for the fronts, they for sure work. You need to do some trial and error to get them to line up with the door jamb. But I was pretty happy with results.

At some point, I'll get more info on all the work I've done. I have sound damper+foam in the doors, the rear hatch, and a few other thing up in the a/b/c pillars to reduce noise, which made quite a difference.

Rears I'm still working on, and have been looking at parts from the f/g X1 and X3 for door seals as better fits, but the E90 stuff looks like it may fit with work.

Thanks for sharing! I've got some interest in quieting up the interior of my X1, especially since installing my down pipe! Probably won't get to it soon, but always interested in what other people are doing to tackle the problem.

I really need to get to posting it, just busy with other things.

I'd say the most significant option is the front door seals, then filling the rear hatch, followed by sound dampening of the front/rear doors and A-B pillars.
