Hi, I have a 2013 X1 35i and also noticed a ticking from the engine under two conditions: 1. when the car is in the garage and 2. more so now that the Chicago weather is getting colder.
I did bring it into the dealership and the service writer said this is a normal sound for BMW engines. He then rattled off a bunch of BMW models that experience the same noise. He said the noise is coming from the fuel injectors. I was relieved to hear that I did not really have a problem. Just curious to know if others are also experiencing this and maybe have more information on. Thanks |

This is normal with the high pressure injectors on the N20 motor.
Although valve tick was also very common on many older BMW's as well. My E36 325 ticked like crazy. The common solution was to over-fill the oil a little. Sometimes, however, it's bad news - the 2007 X3 I just traded had loud ticking and the dealer found the hydraulic valve lifters were failing. They replaced them all under warranty. It was starting to make the same noise again, which is one reason I traded it for the X1. |

Does the ticking sound appear above 1500 rpm? Is it most present at lower gears (1.,2.,3.)?
Then it might be caused by the timing chain which grinds on the guide rail. This is a known issue with the N47 diesel engines. |

I guess the majority of the affected engines will have no serious problems, but there are indeed reports of broken timing chains.
Repair solutions consist of replacing the timing chain and the guide rails, but unfortunately it's expensive. |
