2006 E60 530i timing chain jumped (picture included) - what to do?

My timing chain popped off the sprocket but didn't break anything (it seems).. here is a picture of what it looks like after I took head off.... any advice on what my best course of action is or approximate cost? Take to import shop to rebuild or is a complete engine swap gonna be necessary? I've heard both but not sure which one applies to my situation... Is the swap on needed if chain breaks? I'm in So. CA in the Inland Empire

You don't say how many miles or what the cars overall condition and worth is but if the rest of the car is still good I'm considering how much it will cost to repair that engine and hope it's done right and nothing gets missed do what I did with my old 325i, just get a low mileage salvage engine and install that. I took care of all the common faults like leaks and PCV stuff, new tune and water pump etc. and it's been running perfectly ever since. New owner loves the car as well and everyone who drove it couldn't believe how well it ran. It cost about $200 more than the repair estimate overall. Fresher engine, no techs or machine shop mistakes to worry about. Get one from a reputable source.

Thank you...
Car has 142,000 miles on it and is otherwise in immaculate condition (body and interior)..... I'm not mechanically inclined so I would need an import shop to do the repairs/replacement.... seems like replacing engine is a lot just for chain coming off... what if I was just able to pop chain back on?

You need to get the cams in time with the crank, there is a special tool that does this. There is a reason that the chain came off so you would need to find out why it happened, possibly failed tensioner. You could also have bent valves which would mean the head would have to come off and rebuilt or replaced.

Thank you... head was taken off.... was in a minor (but jolting) front end collision when it instantly happened .... any idea of what something like that will run me for a certified AAA import shop to do?

When I looked it up yesterday just timing chains was over 16 hrs. If the head has to come off figure another 5. I charge $100/hr. at my shop. Machine work, timing parts, new valves, gaskets fluids and other needed parts when done will be over $500 I'm sure. So over $2,500 to repair a high mileage unit and hope for the best.

In my opinion, depending on whether you are going to keep the car, just get a low mileage engine and drop it in. Do all the usual stuff requiring replacement/maintenance while the engine is outside and put it in. It might be even cheaper but even if slightly more it will save you money in the long run.
