usb memory stick size - 32, 64, or 128?

Hi! Curious of the size, model, and format you are using for USB memory.

I recently tried the following with the following results:

32GB Lexar - fat32 - works well
128GB Sandisk - fat32 - search for artist is painfully slow

has anyone had luck with a 128GB USB drive? if not, how about a 64GB?

wondering if the CIC simply doesn't have enough memory/processing power to index a 128GB, or perhaps I have a failing USB stick.

thanks

I use a SanDisk 32GB (that really tiny one) and it works really well. Mind you I don't use search, just directory browse.

I've got a 64GB Sandisk Ultra that's plenty fast, though I think it is only about half full. Also, I suspect iDrive maintains its own database of track info for searching, though I could be wrong on that.

Do any of the respondents of this thread have the non-idrive stereo, with no "enhanced USB" option? Kind of an aside, sorry...

yes, CIC maintains its own database. What I am trying to find out is the max size before it slows down when you search by artist. I am seeing it with a 128gb drive someone stated 64 worked well.

also curious if the file structure has anything to do with it. I am using fat32. wonder if ntfs improves things?

for the 64gb guy, ntfs or fat32?

maybe I can set a smaller partition and test it out.

I'm not sure that iDrive can read NTFS... Might be wrong but all of my flash drives are formatted fat32 for compatibility reasons

I think I figured out part of the problem. In OSX (mac), there is a hidden file placed adjacent to every file. It's called an "apple double" file that's hidden with a ._ as a prefix to the file name. I used a utility to "clean" the USB drive and this has increased the speed of the USB drive. Takes about 8 seconds to pull up my artists (previously, it was 30 seconds).

On a side note, I have a loaner 5 series with the NBT nav. The list comes up instantly. Gotta love the increased processing power of the NBT infotainment system compared to CIC (we have CIC in our 13-15 X1s).

One more reason to never buy a Mac, or any other Apple product.... (keeping in mind that for many people it does have its merit)

Lol I did my best to keep it neutral :-)

But back on topic - would be great if there was an easy way to update our CIC system to NBT... The loading times are annoying.

agreed. However, NBT is a substantial hardware update to drive the enhanced graphics and such. They use a faster processor. I can't recall if they use an SSD. I know for CIC, I've read that others converted the 80GB PATA HD to a PATA SSD. I may try this shortly.....once I get my combox replaced.... (per my other thread).

+1

I haven't heard of going the SSD route... Does it make the system significantly faster?

I am using 64 super fast, no lag. Play, random, next, previous, etc. Runs normal.
Be aware, NTFS doesnt work, you need to be on Fat.

Also in order to use a biger than 32 stick, you need a special tool to make the bigger sticks Fat.

Search on my posts, there is one title on how to do it. You will also find in there the tool that will do it.

Cheers.

Just wanted to let anyone know that searches.
I'm using a SanDisk Ultra Fit 128 GB formatted to NTFS and it works great. I have about 80GB worth of music on it.
exFAT (the original format) was not recognized by iDrive, reformatted to NTFS and it worked like a dream.

Are you able to play movies as well? I'm able to browse the directory in iDrive and see the movies are there but I dont know why mine wont play. I have the dvd in motion activated and verified it works with the physical dvds, but it wont play when i try from a USB.

File formats I've tried are .mkv and .mp4

I use my 8 gb usb drive thats formatted as FAT32. (I use 2-3 movies to test)

You need to activate the additional video formats via coding. Only dvd is activated from the factory.
