Thumbs down When do I need to plug the remote into the dash?

I've just bought a 2013 X1 sDrive28 and realize I do not need to use the remote to lock, unlock, or drive the car. So why would I bother plugging it into its slot in the dash?

The remote's internal battery charges when it's plugged into the dash, so I understand I'll need to plug it in once in a while. And yes, I believe the car's operational data is uploaded to the remote when it's plugged in, so that's another reason for doing so occasionally.

But in day-to-day operation, is there ever any need to remove the remote from my pocket?

I'm a newbie to this car and the latest BMW technology so I would really appreciate an answer!

Thanks!

The only time you need to plug the remote into the dash is if the battery dies in the remote. The dash port does not charge it, there is a replaceable battery in the remote. The battery will be replaced under warranty as long as the 4/50 warranty is in force.

The battery is only rechargeable in non-Comfort Access remotes.

I know people who haven't plugged theirs in for years. I don't think I've plugged mine in ever and the service data seems to have been present in the remote when I went in for service (I had a query on AS/S not working right and they pulled everything up)

Thanks -- I just discovered that while the regular remote is rechargable, my Comfort Access unit uses replaceable batteries.

Question: Does the remote need to be plugged in to record my settings for seat position, radio station, etc. so they activate automatically when I unlock the vehicle?

From the owners manual:
The vehicle is supplied with two remote con‐
trols with keys.
Each remote control contains a rechargeable
battery that is automatically recharged when it
is in the ignition lock while the car is being
driven. Use each remote control at least twice
a year for longer road trips in order to maintain
the batteries' charge status.
In vehicles equipped with Comfort Access, the
remote control contains a replaceable battery,
refer to page 38.

So does that mean that the remote for comfort access is different than non comfort?

I pretty much only use mine when dropping the car off at airport valet parking.

Yes, the keys are different for comfort access vs non comfort access.

And I'm not sure about recording personalizations when not plugged in, but mine records everything just fine and I don't remember ever plugging it in. So either I forgot when I plugged it in, or it records when not plugged in.

I have never plugged mine in and it gets the cars info each time I go into service

The only time I plug mine in is when I'm leaving the car in the hands of someone else. This includes car wash, garage parking, valet, etc.
