What Snow Tires Are You Running?
There are a couple of threads covering snows, but they are a bit scattered and some of them diverge and are older. Just looking to start a central thread that is more up to date experience with different snow tires.
I've been looking at Goodyear Ultra Grip Ice WRT as they have very good reviews (for what I can find anyways). In the past, I've used Alpin and Alpin 2 and was very happy with them on my ZHP. Blizzak WS60 on the MCS but hate them.....I kind of like being able to stop. The dynamics of a X1 are very different, though. I don't have one yet, but Santa just might arrive a couple of weeks late this year. These are basically what I've been considering: 1. Goodyear Ultra Grip Ice WRT 2. Michelin Alpin 2 3. Michelin X-Ice Xi3 4. Dunlop Wintersport 4D (not much out there for this one either, but good reviews from what I've seen). So what are you running (brand, 'model', and size)? Happy with them? Also, please indicate if you have a 28 or 35. TIA

I have the Pilot Alpin PA3's. The plan was to sacrifice a marginal amount of ice and snow traction for better dry grip, but honestly they perform much better in the snow than I expected.

Pirelli Winter Carving Edge Run Flats Studded
Noisy, but that's to be expected with studs. Good snow grip, but not much snow so far this year. Not worried at all this winter. Bring it on. |

They're ok, on dry and wet it has a little less grip than my summertyres (GY Efficientgrip), with fresh snow and slush no troubles getting off carparks. I just don't have other references, but I think they are pretty good wintertyres.

I tried the General Altimax Artic's 17" based on great TireRack reviews. So far no deep snow in SE PA, sticky on the 20F roads and in rain... handling is obviously "softer" than the stiff all season RFT's. Don't get squirmy when accelerating like I've experienced on Blizzaks.

I have Blizzaks on two of my cars (Xterra and Subaru Imprezza) and they work great. In the Xterra I haven't run into anything it can't handle in 4x4 and I live in Colorado and play in the snow a lot. I'm sure I'll get stuck one of these days but it will have to be really deep. I plowed a gal's 300 foot circular drive on a hill with the front bumper the other day and the snow was three feet deep. Didn't even spin.
I had a 2003 330ci (rear wheel drive) with Michelin X-Ice and could go wherever I wanted with that as well as long as it wasn't too deep. Insane traction despite the rear wheels being 10" wide (255 35 18). My impressions and based on all I've read is that if you want the best snow performance you get the Blizzaks and if you want nearly similar (but slightly less) snow performance but better ride/noise/cornering performance get the X-Ice. I'm probably going to go with X-Ice on my X1. One question I have for everyone is this: is there any disadvantage to buying only the snow tires and having them put on the stock wheels vs buying a set of wheels and tires? I understand the cost and convenience, I'm just wondering about TPMS, wear and tear of changing tires twice a year, etc. |

I've always run dedicated winter wheels instead of swapping tires on a single wheel set. The wear on the bead (maybe it's not that bad), added risk of the installer damaging the wheels, minimal but still added cost as well as time doesn't work for me. Plus, in a pinch, there is technically always a temporary spare sitting around even if not ideal for the season. In the past, I didn't have TPMS in my winter set. It is easy enough for me to ignore the warning symbol. I regularly check tire pressure anyways. I went with TPMS this time, though.

X1 did real well in the 3" of snow today, good acceleration without much wheel spin (DTC flickering). Hard braking was straight with ABS chattering. I'll see how the 40 mile drive to work is tomorrow AM in the freezing rain

What is involved when swapping on the winter rims and the tire pressure monitoring system? Does the dealer have to reflash the system?
Audi uses tire revolutions to detect a low tire; no electronic monitors required. It's a simple and effective system, and I'm surprised that other makes don't use it. Moon |

elf', happy to hear that regarding the sensors. The jury is still out here as far as using dedicated winters rather than the all seasons. We have a history of getting tires on rims (and as a PP noted, just ignoring the dashboard warning except on the Audi), but for this year at least, on fresh all seasons, I'll likely stick with that. We do have the option of taking the other car (or the Wrangler) if it gets really silly weatherwise.
Are runflat packages available from the Tire Rack? I haven't tried pricing any out yet. It would be nice to get winters and have the TPM system work. Moon |
