Tyre wear

I just had the first annual inspection carried out on my car for UK law, called an MOT for those who are not aware - needs to be done on cars greater than 3 years old. The front tyres are wearing on the edges which is pretty normal I believe. The rears however have worn in the middle to the point where they are 2.5mm middle, 5mm outside.
My car is running the staggered 18"wheels, with 225*45 on the front and 255*40 on the rear. On the drivers side door frame the tyre pressure guide does mention 255 but if I inflate the fronts to the recommended pressure, and the rears to the recommended pressure I end up with 2.4bar front, 2.8bar rear which might be the cause of the rear centre wear? Has anyone else found their rear tyres are wearing in the centre? The car has done 14600 miles.

I've just checked the pressure today and have now put all tyres at 2.2bar, or in another measure, it's 32. As it's the best part of £800+ for new tyres all round I'm hoping to delay it a little as BMW(who did the MOT) recommended new tyres all round. I will keep a close eye on the rears.

The tyres are the original Pirelli tyres.

I wore out my original tyres in 15,000 miles. Admittedly the driving here is very hard on brakes and tyres as lots of stop/start. We also have to mount pavements a lot and that kills the side walls eventually.

I must admit I didn't specifically check wear across the tyres though - but just thought I'd mention the mileage was similar.

My X1 s28i M Sport with Pirelli P7 summer performance tires is wearing normal across the front with about 8/32 left on both @ 10k miles.

The rears have about 7/32 on the edges and 6.5/32 in the centers.

I've tracked mine 3 times, and rest is mostly road trip miles.

I use a temp gun to adjust pressure for track.

I settled on 42 psi track hot front and 46 psi track hot rears.

You're running about 40 psi rear and 35 psi front, but I think the rears will always wear out faster because of all the torque, and you'd have to run even lower than 40, and then you'd have too much understeer.

I can solve your front side wear problem. You should run 3 more psi for 38 psi in front and 40 psi in rear, and just change all tires when rears are worn out.

Even 38 psi all around might get them to last longer next time, but I think 32 psi in front is way to little.

I hear Michelin Pilot super sports can last 30k miles, and cost less than most Run flats. I'm going Michelin PSS next time.

Replaced my rear tyres (P7 run flats) after about 35k miles and will soon be doing it again having recently gone over 71k, was amazed that the fronts went over 60k and only needed replacing as the outer shoulder was excessively worn. This mileage hasn't been achieved by being a snail as I'm normally an 'enthusiastic' driver

Hi

I run the 18 inch 320 style wheels with P7 RFTs. My fronts wear on the edges and my rears wear in the middle.

I can at a push get 22k out of the rears. I've stuck almost 80k miles on the X1 in 3.3 years and have changed the tyres a few times! My driving is mostly motorway, so probably better for wear.

The only thing I would advise... get the tracking and 4 wheel alignment done at a good garage. My alignment was well out the first time I got it done, and now make sure it's done every year.

J.

I have 39,000 on my factory Goodyears. I will be ordering new tires next week beause they are getting close to the wear indicator ribs. I will be going with Michelin run flats. I would rather have non run flats for the ride quality but i drive a lot and don't want to be stranded.

You can buy a compact inflation/repair kit and use regular tires. My Z06 came from the factory with no spare tire, and a kit.

They were installed today and I went with the run flats. I considered regular tires and a patch kit but I didn't do it.

How about swing over to Walla Walla and get me some Cayuse. It is a short drive from Pasco.
