My car just went in for service, I had the low coolant light come on. Had to top it off 1-2 before I was able to get it in for the service. Same issue as you guys, upon inspection it looks like the plastic has separated slighting from the aluminum causing a leak. Getting a new radiator and some fresh hoses tomorrow.

Hard to believe so many of us all have radiators failing 1-2 times on sub 100k mile cars. Thinking it may be time to part with this car soon. Doesn't sound like the mechanics are big fans of this N20 motor.
People in the 35i of the N55 motors are having the radiator issues too. So while it's a BMW problem and maybe a reason to move away from BMW, it's not specific to you N20 motor. Just an FYI.

Seems like the CSF 7046 would manage to fit, but response I got from CSF is they don't offer anything for E84 35i auto
If I remember correctly, the automatic e90 335i radiator had the same part number as the X1 35i, so I'd assume it would fit. You could try cross checking realoem.com, I can't imagine why it wouldn't fit if it's the same exact part number as the e90 335i auto. Also if you go back to past threads like 5 years ago you could probably find one of the forum members who used to track his X1 and I thought I remembered seeing that he had the CSF radiator.

Paradoxial. I miss him. He had a really nice 35i, and if I recall, he got T-boned and the car totaled.

I'm having issues with the radiator as well not sure how much longer my sanity will hold. Just bought the car recently- 2015 x1 120k miles. So far I've had the radiator and bought hoses changed. Not sure if it's my mechanic that doesn't know what he's doing or it's the car created more issues. It is still leaking coolant- today will be the 5th time it goes back to the mechanic. Has anyone had similar issues? Help!!! Don't know what to do. Thank you

I put this rad in after going through 3 oem ones. It is such a quality radiator and I immediately noticed a drop in temps under load in summer temps. And no more worrying about about plastic cracking!

10/10 recommend.

Were any modifications needed to get it to fit?

Going to be doing the work myself; hopefully goes smooth with the seals and hose fittings... fingers crossed!
How did you find your leak? I've been noticing I'm having to top off my overflow every couple of months. It's usually only down a splash, but I've checked everything and I can't find any trace of a leak. It was always dealerserviced while in warranty (maintenance package), and the last couple of years I've been doing everything. Including the water pump. It's possible they topped the radiator tank off every 7-8k miles when I went in for oil changes.

Nope, fits great. It's seems thicker but bolts in just fine. Our cars have the same part # for the radiator as the e90 N55's this rad is advertised for, so it's a direct fit.

And after the dealer diagnosed the first 2 with a pressure test, when the last one started leaking coolant I just knew, so I bought a tester for myself and sure enough, it wouldn't hold @ 12-13psi for more than 15 minutes. Most of the other coolant parts; hoses, water pump, and overflow reservoir had been replaced recently so I knew it had to be the rad again.

It can be hard to see but I've always noticed dried coolant along the bottom, and sides of the radiator where the metal and plastic meet (and separate ) and on top of the splash shield. This is where every single one of mine failed.

But no problems since! I did a CSF intercooler at the same time and the improvement is incredible.

Edit: (I realized the second question was directed @Sha-Ka, but thought I'd leave my input here anyway)

Just thought I would add my two cents here. I was trying to find another issue and came across this thread. We are on our 5th radiator. It starts to leak on a seam on the driver side every time. I use FCP euro and just get a free replacement. BUT YES...Very annoying.

Radiator leak, and replacement DIY

2013 X1 sdrive28i msport
Like others said, mine started leaking at the plastic/aluminum seam. Here is a link to the DIY I made while replacing the radiator.

Just had to replace the expansion tank. It's about $100 and takes about 30 minutes or so. You will need some antifreeze to to it off. Solved the slight leaking b problem

'13 35i. Replaced expansion tank 3 years ago and it just started leaking again (spraying coolant from the bottom). Thankfully my shop offers 3 yrs/36k mile warranty for the tank. While having that replaced, he also noticed a small leak from the radiator where it connects to the vent hose and upper radiator hose. Current mileage is at 100,4xx and first time tank was replaced was 70K.

I was about to just go with OEM till I came across the CSF radiators, specifically P/N 7046. Everywhere I saw on the web do not list it as it fitting our cars except from CSF's website.

I'll update once it arrives and is installed next week.

Another member posted above he put that radiator in his car and it works great. Let us know if you have any issues.

Did you get your CSF radiator in yet? Just found out the radiator that was preplaced less than 10,000 miles ago is cracked again, same place, aluminum and plastic fitting.

Repair shop is replacing for free, but using another OEM radiator. I may have him do it and then during the holidays, replace with an all aluminum one and keep the OEM as a spare or sell.

Replacing these radiators really sucks

Hasn't arrived yet I patched it up with the permatex radiator fix until the csf comes in.

So I was coding/ tuning one of my other BMWs and noticed that in one of the tunes... there was a code to adjust the RPM of the water pump to push more water thru cooling system...

Could the N55 water pump speed be adjusted to perhaps a lower speed to keep the coolant system from building up top much pressure?

Seems like something to order preventatively!

Question.....I saw a review comment mentioning that it takes longer for the oil temp to get to where it wants as well as longer to heat the cabin in cold weather.

For those that made the switch to CSF, have you noticed these things?

So looking thru RealOEM, looks like the e84 35i radiator is the same for N20 engine and same for several models of E9X models...

Should any high performance Radiator from those models also fit the X1 35i?

Lower oil temps, definitely. the highest I saw this summer was 230 degrees, and I haven't seen anything above 210 since October. Haven't noticed it taking longer to heat the cabin- once it has been running for a few minutes it blows hot, well before it it above 160.

It's only been a month and a half, but any issues? Any praises?

So far everything’s good. Only issue I had was when temps was around 20ish degrees, I had a code pop up and go away for a stuck open thermostat (it only happened when my wife drove the car but she never mentioned any issues). Also, running the heater in the cold drops the coolant temp drastically. My temps are usually around 230 f with heater off and with heater on, it drops to around 170 f.
