Well so far he is doing better than I expected, but you can see he still has much to learn. Stats wise, very well. He was killing it when playing for Para, clearly he'll be working his guts out to get better (i.e needs to start lowering that shoulder more)

He really shines in the aspects most closely related to rugby (punt returns).

Shows a lack of awareness for the hole and an upright running style. Not as quick and shifty in the hole, but I think these things can improve with time. It may also be because he is thinking of what to do during the play and not going on instinct (which he can do on punt returns). I think he makes the team unless he falls flat the next few weeks. Not sure if he can be hidden on the practice squad. He may cost Ellington or Patton a spot on the roster.

I definitely root for these guys. One thing for sure is that they are tough as nails. The Arizona Cardinals have NZ rugby star Paul Lasike trying out for the team. The training camp audience loved watching him in 1 on 1 drills because he was so strong and never backed down.

It was interesting to hear him in an interview when they asked him about the overseas perception of American Football being a tad "soft" because they wear pads vs. rugby wearing no pads. He said the first day of football put that to rest because all the pads do is give the American football player the ability to hit even harder and run through an opponent.

I'd love to see him make the team, but it's doubtful since we are pretty deep at running back and Paul is more of a fullback. Coach Arians usually doesn't keep a fullback on the team since he likes to throw so much. I hope he lands on some team though. Great guy.

I was very skeptical of Hayne when I first heard he was trying out for the 49ers. My first thought was he's going to get overmatched and clocked by some linebacker. He's totally proven me wrong!

When he has the ball, he seems to be able to see tacklers' angles well so he makes quick, small, subtle moves to elude them. It's pretty entertaining to watch the first defender on a punt return try to tackle him but instead go flying by, grabbing nothing but air! That part of his return game seems to be so natural.

At this point, I would be very surprised if he didn't make the 53 man roster. There's no way he'd make it past waivers onto the practice squad. Although I have been rooting for Quenton Patton the past few years, he just makes too many mental errors so I think Hayne will most likely take his roster spot even though he's not a WR.

Good to see another Aussie doing well on the world game and especially so in such a great game.

Gents, can I ask one thing of you? When you talk about Jarrod Hayne he is an ex Rugby League player not an ex Rugby player.

They are totally different games and it's like calling a Canadian and Yank or an Aussie a Kiwi.

Thanks ever so much

Yes, I heard them mention that on the second 49ers preseason game. Now is Rugby League the same thing as Australian Rules Football?

No mate, totally different game.

Rugby League and Rugby (union) are at least somewhat similar.

Thanks. I guess I have some homework to do.

He won't be cut this round and I don't think he will get cut at all. Quality punt returners are hard to come by. His best attribute is he tracks the ball like a baseball outfielder and secures the ball. From what I've seen, he isn't a turnover risk back there and can switch the field with good returns.

He will be signed by another team if he is cut.

At the very absolute worst he will be placed on the practice squad (I doubt this).

He may be inactive (only 45 players suit up every game), but I think he makes the 53 man roster.

Also the 49ers made all their cuts for now. He is one of the 75 remaining. Next cut happens after Thursday's game against the Chargers. I forget the actual cut time.

Is Jarryd Hayne THE biggest star athlete (active) in Australia? If so, how big is he? American reporters are saying he is like Michael Jordan was here during his playing career.

He was certainly highly regarded in his sport and he was quite talented. Not sure if he is THE biggest start though, hard to tell. We've got a few guys in the NBA, Formula 1 driver, Moto GP rider, our cricket team and a few others.

Rugby League is really only played in the two major eastern states of Australia (New South Wales and Queensland) but it is arguably the most popular football code we have. The pinnacle of the sport is State of Origin where the two states play off against each other and it is probably the most brutal game of football you can ever watch. Jarryd was a star in those games!

I'm not sure you can compare anyone to Jordan? The difference we have is we are only a fairly small population (23 million) so any time someone "makes it big" it is a big news story.

I think everyone if hooked on the romance of it all. A guy from the Antipodeans who has never played the game before, a big name in a small country, and he is doing pretty well. Good luck to him, still can't support the 49ers though.

That makes sense. I assume the Antipodeans are in the boondocks.
I understand you can't root for them.
