Pictures load with the news stories that I don't think I've seen before. Before the update, the online features were so slow that it was much easier to just check your phone. Now- still slower, but waiting is possible.

Also- the weather app on the BMW online has stopped working for me. Says the provider is unavailable. Has anyone else had this happen? Honestly this is the only useful BMW online app, so I'd really like to get it back.
That's awesome. I've been dragging my feel due to travel but am looking forward to the new combox

The weather I think goes down intermittently (Sort of like how send to car stopped working a few times over the years), or its a cell signal thing. Hope it works again

I'm with Tominavl: just another example of BMW's horrible customer service. I conveniently received my postcard today and have "...less than one year of service", so I earn the right to pay BMW 200 bucks a year to upgrade and continue my service. What a load of horseshit. I can't get away from this brand fast enough...

$199/yr is the going rate after the initial 4 year contract is up for everyone.

So you get your car upgraded for free if you pay the same $199/yr as everyone else. That sounds like a fair deal.

What exactly is the issue? Did you think the service should be free forever? (I agree but those were never the terms of the deal)

OK, maybe I've got this wrong. I don't have the iDrive nor
did I ever sign up for concierge services. All i know is my car is equipped with an "SOS" button. Given that my airbag in my steering wheel is defective, I think at least a call to report my untimely death in the case of the Takata airbag exploding is a good idea. Yet that technology is also going bye-bye. And now they want me to pay for it. I just think it's a poor strategy for BMW if they want to appease their owners struggling with the Takata fiasco. Maybe if this airbag situation wasn't ongoing, I wouldn't care. But I do care, and this serves to only make my concern for the airbag issue more serious.

Did anyone who's had the Retrofit done have to pay $200?
My dealer says it's an $800 repair and BMW only covers $600

No. Is your service end date beyond 1/2017? Maybe they are saying you have to subscribe to the $199/yr service in order to get the retrofit. My connected drive ends 6/2017 and the retrofit was completely free. If you enter your VIN on the website, it'll tell you your options. If it gives you the option of a free retrofit, free is free.

Again with your nonsense on an airbag that isn't BMWs fault? Go blame Microsoft or Apple for your PC being hacked (and yes both are PCs) (or any of a dozen other examples). BMW is going to replace it, would you rather they replace it quickly like Samsung did with their phones and have it blow up in your face just like the original, or take extra time to replace it with truly fixed version (and I loved my Note 7!).

I'm with NickNaz. If they are charging you $199 and it's the same as anyone else would pay per year for service, stop your complaining. If you have proof they refuse to upgrade you because your contract expires before 2017, I'll concede you are right on 1 of your 2 issues.

I believe been noted, but the notice officially says:
"Retrofit of new cellular technology. Customers with less than one year remaining on their current subscription may purchase a BMW Assist Safety Plan for $199 per year to ensure an extended period of service."

And, what did you expect to happen when your contract did happen - a free continuation of the SOS service forever when your contract expires? Again if you have proof you were ever offered or told that would be free forever, then shame on me unless it was a salesman that said it and you have nothing in writing.

I'm going to talk to my own dealership Friday for specifics to report back here, but this would logically tell me "SOS" is going to function under a different name.

You haven't given any mention to talking to anyone with knowledgeable input, other than complaining about a flyer and a faulty 3rd party airbag used in millions of vehicles. I know this is a little off topic, but come on. The original comments I've gleaned over from the past few years did say it was going to be discontinued entirely, until droves of people complained about it and BMW changed their mind.

Mine ends in 2024 that is why I asked. I'm going to check with a couple other dealers.

Here's the full list of stuff that BMW assist provides for 4 years for free with each car
http://www.bmwusa.com/Standard/Conte...4andlater.aspx

The BMW assist functionality obviously limited without idrive (e.g. real time traffic, send destination to car, etc wouldn't be available, and SOS, unlock car, and stolen vehicle recovery look to be the key features that non iDrive cars have)

By the way, did you know that entire 2017 ferrari line up uses Takata airbags? Or that SOS and automatic collision notifications is only free for 6 month with mercedes (and $199/year afterwards). I don't believe either Porsche or Tesla offer automatic collision notification at all (I don't think Ferrari does either)

Personally, I do think you have it wrong. Each of us gets the 4 years free BMW assist, and we all have to pay to keep it active after 4 years, and the tech is being replaced to allow that to happen

You could show your displeasure by going to another company, but most of the usual BMW competitors either don't have the tech or in the case of MB, will charge you after 6 months of owning the car

Sure, it is upsetting to have recalls, and I supposed I could be accused of being a fanboy after putting up with stuff like my Z435 being in the shop ~16 times in 36 months, but on the other hand, I didn't really care that much since I got a sweet loaner each time (X5, 5er, 135is, 335 etc), and all of the usual German suspects have worse in cabin tech anyway

Best of luck getting your airbag replaced, and hope you don't let that get you too wound up and upset over X1 ownership

EDIT On an off topic note, I believe that the service each of us receives from BMW and other organizations is a combo of our approach/attitude, and the sales and service people we choose to work with. I've gotten my last few cars without setting foot in the dealerships (and have gotten great deals) and whenever I need maintenance of warranty repair I find myself in reasonably interesting cars (fully loaded 435 coupe with 61 miles most recently). My advice is to be really selective with your SA and CA, and treat them right with top survey results and a holiday card/gift, and also be respectful to people like porters and transportation associates. If you come in hot with "guns blazing" in person about your X1 like how you do on your forums, that could be why you get "bad service"......

EDIT2: sorry didn't mean to preach, but c'mon... this thread was about info for the retrofit.. not complaining about airbags

Has anyone upgraded with any success? My '15 sDrive28i has been with the dealer for a week now. The upgraded combox that was sent by BMW, VIN specific to my vehicle, is having complications. The box was installed without installation problems, but the software keeps being rejected by the X1. I was told that there is a ticket out to BMW to help resolve the issue...either different software or another combox or both? Either way, I'm becoming slightly worried about the whole process and getting a working upgrade.

I had the upgrade done yesterday. SA said about an hour to install hardware and another 3 to program. Unfortunately, I am getting a service not available error when I try to access BMW online. I don't know whether the problem is in my car or with the service itself.
Will play with it more today.

Had my performed as scheduled and then when activated the car kept calling 911. They had the car for a week and engaged one of their specialist, come to find out it was at the server end of the process, back at BMW it was not configured correctly. All is good, lost some changes I had made when I first got the car ,but times change and now they do not seem that important to me. Service was exceptional, was updated daily and they gave me a 4 series for the time in the shop. I have praises for the way it was handled. Satisfied customer

Thanks for your informative and respectful response. I am not complaining about the airbags. My point is that we are all driving a potential "time bomb" and this is not good timing to create another faulty safety system. This thread is unveiling a heap of problems with the new system. I think they should not have sent me a silly postcard notice of discontinuation...that is all. And I also believe the consumer doesn't "earn" good service. Nope. We PAY DEARLY for that. And to my dealer's credit, I am impressed by their service, and after 3+ years of ownership, I am extremely satisfied with my X1. Except for this...

I understood att discontinuation of tech as the root cause for all of this.

I'd go for an airbag disconnect exemption if my x1 had a takata airbag

Update: The dealer was sent the wrong combox for my X1. It is going to go through a final road test this morning and should be available this afternoon. I've had a 528i that I'm happy to give back. Anemic engine for that big car.

I opted for the giftcard, and they say I have to come in and have it deactivated?? Maybe I can get the airbag recall done at the same time. 88k miles still drives like new!

Technology evolves, and older technologies have to be end of life'd for things to move forward. Having SOS in your car isn't even the primary function of a car:

The SOS in your car is a luxury - not a right - just like owning/driving a car is a privilege, not a right.

I disagree. If you buy a car with the SOS installed, it is a right. Because you paid for it, and you deserve to had it.

Please explain how it is a right when you are given service dates when buying the vehicle? SOS is not 911, like on your cell phone which IS IN FACT mandatory by law. It's a subscription service, like it or not and there is no "koolaid" in that statement.

You buy antivirus, and are given valid dates for updates - is that a right?

You pay 50k for software as a business that you don't own and have 10% maintenance cost, but it won't work or doesn't give required government updates after that time if you don't pay, is that a right?

Oh and you get a virus because an ad on a reputable site is infected - I guess you aren't responsible for the 100-500 to fix that problem either, because your AV subscription either didn't catch it or ran out, "eh"?

Even better, AV is installed on all new laptops but runs out in 30-90 days - Guess it is your right to have it functional even though you are told it runs out?

You spent up to 10's of thousands of dollars on a car and it is the manufacturers fault the service ran out or old tech needs an upgrade on you and costs because you need to renew service? Shame on you and your self worth/importance.
