Dashcam installation to 12v socket
Hi everyone, I am attempting to install dashcams onto my car and my partner's x1.
I picked up the Blackvue DR500W for the X1 but she doesn't want it to be hard wired. I considered using the 12v socket on the centre console but it looks to be too visible. So I am looking at running the cable to the rear and plugging it into the socket located in the boot. Unless there is a hidden socket elsewhere like under the glove box?? Anyway running the wire to the rear seems easy enough. My concern is with the auto stop start function. So I was wondering whether X1 owners here have experience in installing dashcam and whether the dash cam will turn on and off with auto stop start. Any other advices? Thanks heaps |

I have one hard wired into the fuse box and would definitely recommend this approach. That said I used to have it in the 12v socket for a couple weeks before I hard wired it. Auto start stop doesn't cut out the power to the socket so you'll be fine (at last the front socket, never tested rear socket).
For what it's worth the hard wire is really easy with the add-a-fuse. |

Hard wire does not necessarily have to mean "permanent," nor does it involve cutting the vehicle's factory wires. You really want to do this job as cleanly as possible, and using an "add-a-fuse" in the fusebox is the best way.
Add a fuse: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...ilpage_o07_s01 Use this guide to hard wire it: http://e84.xbimmers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=765783 As far as the auto stop/start is concerned - the ignition will still be on, only the engine itself turns off. |

Thanks guys, I agree with your comment. Hardwiring is definitely a better option. Will keep trying to convince my partner haha.
I installed a dashcam on my F30 using "add a fuse" yesterday. It was pretty simple as the fusebox is pretty easy to access in the boot. Whilst in the X1, the Fusebox behind the glove seems a little harder to access. Will have a proper look at it next weekend. Which fuse did you guys tap into for hardwiring? Can you guys upload a picture of the fusebox? Thanks again. |

I actually liked the glove box install better as I didn't have to run the cable as far. Also for my install I attached a 12v outlet to the fuse so that I could use the factory power cable that came with the dash cam. Here's the picture - I also prepared the power module for the V1 but haven't installed the radar detector itself yet. Let me get on my computer and upload the image - not working on my cell....
