VRSF 7in Intercooler install, N55 M Sport

I installed a VRSF 7inch intercooler recently, all went well and the intercooler and components fit well with trimming of the black plastic inner bumper on X1 35i M Sport, N55. I have made several full boost runs since the install and all feels great and the intake temps only increased by a couple degrees. The stock intercooler does a good job handling normal boost, but when you do a pull at 17psi+ the intake temps go up quite a bit.
I decided on the 7in VRSF because I wanted to give the front end a better look and the extra 2 inches really help make the intercooler more visible from the front inside the M Sport bumper. The clamps and piping work well and fit up just fine. I have an ER Charge pipe and that worked well with the VRSF upper intercooler pipe. As with any intercooler install, you have to think it through and position t-bolt hose clamps in a direction that can be reached to tighten. I did the install by myself and used jacks and jack stands to raise the front of the car in my garage. All in all it was a few hours and most of the time was spent cutting and trial fitting the intercooler. The stock intercooler can be removed in 15 minutes! If the 7in fits I am sure all of the other 5in intercoolers would be a breeze to install.
I don’t know of any other 7in intercooler installs on the X1 35i so I wanted to give everyone a heads up that it is possible and works great, just need to cut(dremel tool and tin snips) about 2 inches of material off the black bumper plastic then your good to go! Very pleased with the product and Tiago at VRSF has been helpful and part of the BMW community for a while and has great products at competitive prices. You'll see great reviews of his producs from 135 or 335 guys on those forums.

At this point, I have everything bolted onto this X1 that I can to make power and run 40% mix e85 and JB4 Iso with FF wires, map 5. Possible next step is the Pure Turbo upgrade and custom dual exhaust with quad tips.

With your cat-less DP, do you run with the idiot light on, or have you had it coded to not run cat efficiency? Glad that 7" fit, I'll be doing my IC in the spring. Not sure what brand, but I'm leaning towards COBB or Wagner. Hopefully that 35i coolers will fit, I have no doubts that they will.

The JB4 from BMS clears the check engine light. I'd go for an intercooler kit that replaces the stock inlet fitting as that has a very poor design for airflow. I think the Wagner and many other units are more of a bolt on with no piping changes.

I don't have a picture of the installed scoops, will have to wait for some sunshine and the right angle for picture so that they can be seen. I have no way of knowing if they positively impact airflow to the airfilter... was more of a challenge to buy and set and see if they fit... I did have some dremel work to get the top air ducts to go back in place and seal tightly.

Snapped a quick picture this morning... debadged, tinted, lowered, painted calipers. Hopefully can secure one of the custom carbon fiber front lips and then cf mirror caps will go on...
I cant remember the exact weight I saved on each wheel and tire, but I think it was around 12lbs-14lbs at each wheel.. I had stock 18in M wheels with run flats, then went to forged 19's and non runflat tires.

Your car looks great, BTW. Have you any dyno results since your new mods? And in your pictures, the front rims look like they need wider tires.

No dyno work done, no awd dyno's near me. Maybe in the spring I will schedule a few pulls. More concerned with daily driving, reliability and hopefully high 12's at the track...
The tire spec is same as stock staggered fit, didn't want to go outside the factory specs to keep the awd system functioning properly. I think it is the angle of the sunshine on the tire that makes it look stretched.

My issue is, nothing is made for the N20. Anything will give me huge gains. What do you do when going in for service? Do you just put it on the map that keeps JB4 on, but uses stock tuning parameters?

I have had it in for alignment and oil change, that is all... I left the JB4 turned on for the alignment and the oil change I did switch to map 0. For inspection next year I will try on map 0 and drive 10-20 miles before the inspection. From my tests, the check engine light only came on after 30+ miles.
My local dealer is fairly mod friendly so we will see what happens. If I have to swap the catted midpipe back in for inspection, then I will do that to pass. I have several months to figure out a plan!

Mine is pretty cool too, I'm worried about them saying something about the cat-less DP. As that's illegal in Canada to remove it. They were the guys that lowered my car, and I don't think they'll say much about tuner. I'll go see my SA, see what he thinks they'll say about the DP.

You should gain a nice performance boost, just from the lighter wheel/tire combo. Do you know if 245-35/19s fit the front?

Advice/Help,Anyone, Please.

Hi mwtrogus,
Car is looking good with your ongoing Mods and the bigger Intercooler.
Did you change your fan also?

I am thinking of upgrading my Intercooler(6rows to 8rows) and Fan(400w to 600w) before Chipping. I asked BMW (always Q. there advice) which one to start with and they said Fan.

I am after some brief advice on what the functions of the Intercooler-Radiator and fan are. eg. Engine water heat goes to Intercooler and is cooled down then to Radiator and if getting hotter, Fan comes on to cool down. Just a basic idea.
Cant remember where but one comment was, too bigger Fan might not allow engine to heat to required temp. Maybe that's if you live in snow/winter area.

I live in Tropical area and would have thought an improved Intercooler and Fan would be better all round.
Just trying to find peace of mind, Thanks.

So the bigger fan will help at idle. Maybe up to about 10m km/h. After that it becomes rather useless. Most of the airflow over the intercooler comes from it moving through the air.

I've been trying to research online, but since the 7" intercooler fits behind the msport bumper, do you think it will also work for the n20? I can't seem to find anyone installing an aftermarket intercooler on an n20 yet so that your comments would be extremely helpful.

How does your catless downpipe smell while driving and at stop lights? I've read various responses from the Subaru forums of catless DPs smelling less after a tune and some say the still smell like rotten eggs. Does the auto/start feature help at stoplights with the smell too?

I'd find a n20 intercooler option, the big 7 inch may be too much pressure drop and not help you much to make more power. If oem intercoolers are the same for n20 and n55 then it will fit, but I didn't look it up to verify.

"How does your catless downpipe smell while driving and at stop lights? I've read various responses from the Subaru forums of catless DPs smelling less after a tune and some say the still smell like rotten eggs. Does the auto/start feature help at stoplights with the smell too?"

I have no cats, the downpipe and the secondaries have been removed, full custom exhaust setup all stainless, borla catless front pipes from 335 into vibrant resonators and then a maganflow muffler into a modified Active Auto version 1 135 rear section. Sounds great, but fumes are an issue... idling in traffic with windows down you can definitely smell exhaust. e85 changes the smell a bit so its not that bad. It doesn't not smell like rotten eggs at all. I dont have start/stop in n55 car.
