Auto Start Stop

I've searched the forum without success. I have a '13 X Drive 28i. When the auto start stop is active the start is quite noticeable. Does everyone else experience this also?

A LOT of complaints about the system on the N20. You're not alone. Most recommendations are to just leave it off.

After owning the car for almost 2 years now I had mine coded by the dealer to stay off by default when you start the car last month. It is by far the best mod I have done to my X1 so far.

I've seen a lot of complaints about ASS, but I am not one of the complainers. To me when the engine restarts it's a fairly subtle sensation. I'm not sure if it just works better on my X1 or if others are very sensitive to the car restarting at all. I certainly wouldn't call the sensation a "shudder," as I've seen others describe it. Maybe it also has to do with how you depress the pedal. I'm not a driver to "blast off," so maybe because I take it easy there's less of a sensation.

At any rate, if I am coming to a stop in a situation where I expect to otherwise be idling for a minute or more, I let ASS engage. In other scenarios, I ease to a stop and ASS does not engage. It's a matter of feel. Very rarely in true stop-and-go traffic on the freeway I will click ASS off. Otherwise, I go by feel.

And in busy Los Angeles, my sDrive mpg average as I approach 30,000 miles is 28. Happy with that, and at least a fraction of that is due to ASS, I would bet.

I wouldn't say the restart on mine was noticeable. May the combination of the Diesel engine and the manual box helps.
I have noticed as the colder weather approaches, stop start very rarely cuts in though.

Glad we got the 35i as it comes without Start/Stop

Mine works perfectly fine. I do not use it all the time. I turn it on in heavy traffic.
The most important thing you can do is learn how to control it with the brake when you come to a stop, otherwise you will hate it.

You may want to check the manual on this. I vaguely remember reading in there and on the forums about using it in stop and go heavy traffic can cause issues and BMW advises against using it then.

I only notice it when the AC is switched on at the same time. So when the weather is hot and my AC is on, I would make sure the ASS is turned off.

That is why I say you should learn to prevent the engine stop when you see you are not going to be stationery for a while. If you are just letting it stop the engine every time traffic comes to a halt, you will run into issues eventually.
Same thing when you get to a red light, you more or less know how long you will be there.

page 59 (Italics are mine):

Quote:
Automatic Engine Start/Stop Function
The concept
The Auto Start/Stop function helps save fuel. The system switches off the engine during a stop, for instance in congestion or at traffic lights. The ignition remains switched on. The engine starts automatically when you wish to drive away.

Certain vehicle components may experience additional wear as a result of this system.

I've not had any problems. I normally drive in SD so it is disabled, but I often shift to D when sitting at longer lights to enable it. When the light changes, just shift to SD and it starts right up.
