Installation of X1 CARRIER BUMPER REAR 511242

2013 X1 - need to install this carrier so I can use the rear bike rack. My dealership says it's a four hour job - I'm not sure.

Has anyone installed this part? Do I have to remove the bumper? Can you direct me to a video or something?

Part number 51-12-7-341-540

Thank you!
Jules

I think the part number got cut off in the subject.

If it's the rear crush bar that has the two nuts for the bike carrier then yes you do need to remove the bumper and you will need several clips as they are one time use only. But it's not a 4 hour job, maybe 2-3 hours first time around.

Search around on YouTube for hitch installation videos - the bumper removal is the same.

Yeah that's what I was talking about.

You can easily do this yourself and would take you a couple hours. And look for hitch installation videos for bumper removal instructions - just make sure you have those extra plastic clips.

This is the video from the hitch I have. You would need to do everything up to 1:05. It's not the most detailed but you can see the mechanics doing everything. Ask if you have any questions.

So the bumper he's removing is being replaced by the new part?

The metal section behind the bumper, yes. That's called the crush bar (since it is crushed to absorb energy in the event of a rear end crash), it is held on by three nuts on either side.

The crush bar that game from BMW World is much shorter and narrow than than the bar that is installed - is that an issue?

I imagine it will be different as it is now load bearing, but from a few photos I've seen it's not drastically different. Can you post a few photos? Maybe someone who has done that change can chime in?
