3.5 Shifter Replacement

Anyone replace the shifter in a 3.5 with the one that looks like the one in 2.8?

I thought about buying one of these, but was worried it would look and feel out of place.
I have the BMW Performance shift knob and the matching e brake handle... nice Alcantara feel and the silver looks nice... just wish the silver was brushed to match the dash pieces...I think this is the part# 25162153758, it is about $90 and the same for the e brake handle.

I was wondering if this is possible too. Not a fan of how the higher specced X1 comes with an old style shifter

It looks like the 8 speed shifter has electronic actuation of PARK, which you'll just ignore?

Forget the shifter...it's because it comes with the entire old-style transmission.

It's not higher spec'd in terms of the trans.

And OP...stop calling them 3.5 and 2.8!

Either say 3.0l/2.0l, or 35/28

I have these in my X1 as well as alcantara center section of M sport steering wheel
Shift Knob, 25162153758

E-Brake handle, 34402153755, the ebrake handle fits, but the alcantara boot doesn't fit the X1.

You can pull the 35i gear knob right up and off, and put another one in place. You'll lose the button that protects against going to reverse[*], and there won't be any electronics to hook up like on the 28i, but otherwise, most knobs will do fine.
I like the standard knob, except for wishing the plastic on it was leather, like on the handbrake. Not alcantara, which is plastic too (fake suede).
[*]: If your transmission breaks, good luck proving to BMW that this wasn't a contributing cause. And insurance companies might have a say too.

Is it safe to change the gear knob from an M sport pistol to the automatic shift knob? I have a 2014 x35i. Would it even work properly?
