Bike Rack Options For Bmw X1

Hi All,

Could anyone help me understand what are my options on an X1 to mount a bike rack, either a roof application or if the X1 has a hitch option?

Thanks,

Camilo

Search bump. Anyone put a hitch on their X1? I need to mount a bike rack to a hitch. The picture above looks like some fancy in-bumper system... not so sure about that one

i've seen this before up close. the rack is screwed tight through the tow-hook connections (left and right). they're very sturdy and can tilt away to access the boot.

1. will a road bike, with the back seats down, lay flat down in the x1?

2. will a road bike with the front wheel off lay down flat?

3. I saw that fancy bike rack with a hitch on a volvo sedan, very stable and the bikes did not move. It might be worth it for a long trip.

Thanks in advance.

The X1 is only four inches taller than the 3er, so a roof rack wouldn't be that much reach. Then you can run anyone's cross bars, Thule, Yakima or the OE ones (made by Thule) with any attachment you want. I'm sure doing a 2" hitch wouldn't be tricky either, if you prefer a hitch rack.

I can fit my 58cm road bike, or my 29er mtb inside the E82 1er, so I can't imagine they wouldn't fit in the E84, but for wet or muddy bikes, or for carrying more than one or two, it's still nice to have an exterior rack.

YES IT DOES! THANKS!

Yes I feel clean bikes are always better inside the car. (road)

For mt bikes, both on top and hitch are personal preferences. After retirement I worked in a bike shop and saw/heard horrible stories for both.

If you have a hot bike be careful out there.

I agree it should be a great roof rack car but I have heavy, muddy downhill bikes that will damage paint by just sitting above it so it's a hitch mount for me.

I agree with your choice for Mt. bikes, just watch the jerks behind you, and in the parking lots.

Hehe, as someone who had a hydraulic brake line leak on the roof of a car, I know what you mean, yet I still continue to use roof racks.

I am pretty certain that no one will be able to carry TWO bikes in the X1.

Unlike my TDI Golf where I can have FOUR bikes inside, the X1 has a good 5-6" less in floor-to-ceiling height since the X1 floor is so HIGH comparatively.

While this sounds like not that much difference, it means that you cannot stand the bikes up (front wheel removed) in the X1 like you can the Golf, which means you have to lay the bike down.

Now if you have Toys-R-Us bikes where you truly don't care if they mash against each other, I suppose you could stack one on top of the other.

However as someone who cares about bikes and even cheap bikes (whose derailleurs can still get twisted and un-adjusted from such brutal treatment and handling as laying one on top of the other), I would not recommend this.

Truly the X1 can only fit one bike inside, which is the same capacity as the 3'er sedan with the trunk and seats folded down. Bring your bike to the dealer and see for yourself. The VW Golf carries more (and I was shocked and saddened to discover this).

I currently carry two bikes in my wifes Volvo XC 60.

Mine a carbon bike on top of hers with a heavy carboard between them.

No problems for three years.

The X1 cannot be shorter in height (trunk) then the sloping roof of the volvo.

?????

Glad you've been able to make it work.

When you stack two bikes in the car, do you also have any room left in the car for luggage or overnight bags or grocery bags? Imagine the case of heading for a long weekend to hotel or cabin with the bikes. Is there enough room, does that work too?

Do the bags go on top of the bikes, or the reverse?

The nice thing with bikes being able to stand up, is that the chain always goes on the right, so no cargo ever gets close to touching the black greasy chain.

So tonight's trip in the Golf TDI to our place on Cape Cod featured two bikes standing up, but also room for a week's luggage and cycling clothes, stopping midway at grocery store, getting a week's worth of groceries, multiple laptop bags, my large tool bag with drills, a prior stop for 2 large boxes of NH Liquor store libations, the big red cooler of food from home, etc. IE - the usual stuff I'm sure most everyone carries for a week vacation away.

How much of this would fit with two bikes laying down? Some? None? All?

NONE, the two bikes lying flat is for short trips, not an over nighter. You are correct that standing the bikes up (old X3 or Golf) is a much better arrangement. Any long distance the new X1 would need some type of bike rack.

I'm simply planning on hooking a bike rack up to my tow hitch....but I guess you have to have a tow hitch to do that...
