Maybe someone better than me can clarify this, I always thought if you're in that situation if you suddenly lift, you lose traction, vs at least keeping some traction (albeit slipping) and try to recover. Ofc, I don't mean keep the gas pinned but ease up very gently, and also definitely no brakes.

Yes, you're correct. What bites people by the sudden lift when traction is lost in the rear is due to weight abruptly shifting to the front which lightens up the rear end and that's why you'll see it kick out at a much faster rate in which it previously was.

In that situation, you're correct to ease off the throttle but it's human nature to panic and immediately let off the pedal which put you in the situation in the first place. I've been guilty of it on track while knowing better, but it's why I don't drive like a dick on the street either.

I've owned 18 mustangs and 8 BMW's. There are a ton of douche bags on both ends. In my experience there are quite a bit more on the Bimmer side.

If you lift suddenly while dialing in a bunch of counter steer you will rapidly cause the car to start spinning in the other direction because of the weight transfer to the front upon throttle cut, usually setting into motion a series of corrections that come too late and are too abrupt leading to a tank slapper. If you had trouble with the low speed yaw that came on pretty gradually under power, you will absolutely be overwhelmed by this and will most likely end up in the ditch/on a curb/in a crowd. Keep the throttle closer to the original level and dial in a bit of counter and you'll usually be much better off.

Watch someone tracking their rwd car loose the rear and rapidly dial in some counter steer, their throttle isn't being cut drastically if they're catching it, just a steady right foot and quick hands.

This ^

At :26 you can see the BMW lift completely at the end = tank slapper. Lucky to catch it in time.

You can SLOWLY let off the throttle (down to zero throttle if you want) to scrub speed if you need to as you countersteer
Maintain throttle and scrub less speed as you countersteer
Give more gas as you countersteer and power through it.

All depends on angle and radius of the turn.

Hard to capture in the vid, but it was pouring rain that day.

This better shows how wet it was. Go to 1:30. Sorry for the poor sound.

What do you think the odds are that a mustang cars and coffee crash has not been posted multiple times on every car forum more than 3 weeks after it occurred? Lol
