Interior room

Fueleconomy.gov posted info on the X1. Shows it is classified as a midsize car because it has 98 cu ft of passenger volume, 2 cu ft more than the 328i. Does that sound right? Thought the X1 was tighter than the current 3 series. I had taken the X1 off of my list because i thought it would be too tight for anyone to fit behind me (I'm 6' 1"). Now I'm rethinking that. Can any current owners comment on interior room? Also, sX128i is rated 24 city, 34 hwy, one better on both than 328 despite being heavier and having a higher drag coefficient. That doesn't seem right either, although they dropped the 328i's numbers down from what BMW estimated on 328i, so maybe BMW was right.

I'm 1.84M and I can sit okay behind myself, it really depends how low you sit, I always have it on the lowest possible setting and then the room room is less.

I'm a little above 6'0" and I think the space behind me is fine. Not great for long trips, but I think anything under 2 hours is fine (if the passenger is my height).

I set in a X1 xDrive28i last Saturday, and also in a 2012 new model (F30) 328i. X1 rear seat space is a little better than the old (E90) 328i, but definitely smaller than F30. I am 5'10". After setting the driver seat conformably, I can fit in behind the driver. If I sit straightly, my knees will not hit driver seat. But, for a long drive, if I lie down, there is not room to stretch my legs. But, since X1 is a small SUV, it is easier to carry stuff than F30. That is, in terms of utility, it is better than F30. Also, X1 interior luxury is on par with E90, but a half level lower than F30. I found out that X1 is one of the cheapest cars on BMW dealer parking lot. If you want 2012 328i (F30), you need to prepare for $3000-$4000 more for the similarly equipped.

I'm 6'2" and when I test drove the X1 I adjusted the front seats so that I could drive the car and sit comfortably in the passenger seat. Then I moved to the back to check legroom. I would agree with the earlier comment that you can sit in the car but I wouldn't want to be 6'2" in the back seat behind a tall driver for 6-8 hours.

I should note that while I'm tall I prefer to sit fairly upright in the driver's seat compared to most people. The back of the seats have cutout for the back passenger knees and if you like a lot of recline in your front seats that makes using that cutout space really hard for tall back seat passengers. I compared the car to a 2009 3 series wagon and thought the rear room was fairly similar, close enough that it had no impact on my buying decision, but if that is a big criteria I'd give the edge to the 3 series. I have not compared it to the current 3 series sedan mainly because of the cost difference and my need for more cargo capacity than the sedan offers.

Thanks for all the feedback. This is all very helpful. The X1 is back on my list as I wont need it for family road trips (wife is getting an Infiniti JX for that). Still haven't decided for sure that I'm going small crossover (X1 or Q5, leaning towards the former in rear drive but like the looks and space of the latter) or go with sedan (Cadillac ATS or 328/335, ATS might be a little too tight in the back). Currently lease 2011 Z4 but need more practical car again. Previously owned E90 335xi and enjoyed it. Prefer a sport sedan from a driving standpoint, but might go with sporty crossover to improve utility. Going to drive all four this winter and then decide.

You should feel right at home with the X1 if you had a 335i before. While my X1 20i is nowhere near 335i in terms of power, the steering and overall driving experience feels very similar (I drive my brother's E90 335i in the States sometimes).
