rough downshifting
Does anyone else notice especially rough automatic downshifting as you're braking/coasting to a stop? Seems pretty bad when shifting down to 2nd for me.

To coast, you need to put it in neutral. But unless you're hypermiling or drive through a neighborhood where engine braking is illegal, I generally don't recommend coasting. |

To answer the OP, yes. TBH the whole car is kind of jerky and stiff compared to what i'd expect, it wants to be hustled and doesn't seem happy tootling about.

mine had a hard down shift 3 -> 2 and a hard upshift 6 -> 7. I felt this the first time with a cold engine at the first stop, after 1 or 2 km. It got worse after a road trip and driving 400 km nonstop and ending up in a traffic jam, it felt like being hit by a car in the back.
the dealer reset the gearbox settings but it only helped for a few weeks. They changed the gearbox under warranty and problem seems solved now. |

I've got a 2013 X1 28i and haven't noticed any hard shifts at all unless I'm in sports mode or really pushing it. When I coast I leave it in great and while it does slow down it's ever so slightly that even when hypermiling I don't bother going to neutral as in great the engine isn't using fuel anyway

I've had my X1 for about a week now and noticed it as well! It's a bit of an issue when I'm sitting in traffic and just crawling along, I feel it a lot then. Is this normal for BMWs?

You should not feel anyting while in "D" crawling in traffic.
You will more aware of downshifts when in manual mode. |

Yeah, but you have a different transmission than I do. Engine braking, and automatic downshifts while "coasting" are quite noticeable, but not objectionable. First A/T car I've owned that does that. In bumper to bumper traffic, it must be somewhat alarming to a following driver that the car in front of them slows rapidly, without showing brake lights. BTW, the effect is more pronounced as my speed drops. No complaints about the acceleration.

That's interesting because my '13 X1 x28i coasts quite easily without dropping speed too much and while I notice the downshifts it's only when I'm really paying attention.
I know that the throttle body and transmission adapt to your driving style so I can only imagine that would be the difference. Has anyone with issues tried to reset the throttle body and transmission? |

x281 here. With no evident pattern this car very rarely makes a VERY harsh downshift from 2nd to 1st--always when moving at a crawl. It is sometimes quite disconcerting.
Never have seen this between any other gears. |
