I had considered it at one time, but then where would you store it in the car. There is just no room in the back without sacrificing the little space left. I just went ahead and got a compressor kit with some plugs, which store well in the side compartment opening. They are run-flats, so I just wanted a plan B contingency. I expect to replace them for regular tires when the time comes, cost issue. Although run-flats are seeing more traction with other manufacturers. The price might be lower by the time I am ready for the next set.

I ordered new rims but I have chosen normal tires, so no runflats.
I ordered a Mobility kit and jack kit as well. And I got a service in my insurance when I have car problems. Hope all of those will help me out. http://www.leebmann24.de/mobility-set.html http://www.leebmann24.de/wagenheber-set.html |

I've ditched the whole spare/run flat idea all together. If I get a flat with my regular tires, I can at least have it towed to any place that sells tires and have them put a plug in it. As others have stated, either the spare or the run flats only offer limited speed and distance, and you don't want to be that guy on the Alberta highways doing 80. I'd throw a jug of piss at you if I saw you doing that.

Further, most run flats are good for 25 to 200 miles whereas a mini spare is good for thousands of miles. Getting stuck with a flat in the middle of a western or mid west state (USA or Canada providence) on a Sunday evening with just a run flat means a tow job, a motel, etc. Been there done that with a regular tire as getting a replacement was problematic. On the east coast I might think differently. |

To get one of those through my BMW Dealer in Aust. would cost close to AUD$700 ex Germany. It would be cheaper, including freight to get that one. I think some time back it was suggested you could clip out the small back portion of the parcel tray near the rear seat and stand it up, still leaving most of the parcel tray intact. Or just lay it down with the hole side facing up for small storage. How often do we fill our car with people and luggage that there becomes no room what so ever for a spare tyre. Mine occupies 3 with luggage and I can still make room for a full size spare if need be. To each his own as they say. I think a Space Saver Spare is only good for certain mileage and speed. IF SO When you find a new, or lucky enough to have repaired your RFT, WHERE then would you get a new replacement Space Saver Spare TYRE? |

Hi all,
Several hints: 1) The E60 36 11 0 308 889 spare wheel fits and 50% cheaper. There is also a plastic foam insert with the regular jack and the wheel wrench in this kit. The original X1 spare wheel is alloy, but 1,5 times more expensive and does not have the jack and wrench in the kit. 2) You can put it into the E90 spare wheel bag 51 47 0 444 689 and attach the four straps to the buckles in the trunk corners, so the wheel does not jump. 3) There is also a more stable X5 jack 71 12 6 754 372 which however needs the winding handle to be ordered additionally (don't know the number but will update as I get it). I've ordered these all and fitted perfectly in the trunk. Will be able to make photos if someone is interested.

If you lift out the first floor cover and remove the pieces of plastic underneath, that provides a few inches of additional depth. Because the donut spare is thin, it can then be placed nicely down in the center and can be fully covered/concealed with the plastic fitted trunk mat....you lose maybe about 2 inches on trunk depth when done...no big deal. If you blowout a rft at 2 a.m. and are more than 50 miles from home, that's not good. This is cheap insurance and you keep your trunk space.

Very nice 3Bims. I really like what you did and makes me wonder why the car doesn't come with regular tires and a donut spare. Thanks for sharing the pictures. When time to replace my tires, I'm ditching the run flats since I can reasonably carry a donut spare and jack.

Whats Wrong - Whats Right.
I am finally getting new Rims and Non RF Tyres this week. Will be using Original for Spare in the back for the time being. We travel distances and are not prepared to stuff around crawling along freeways.
Twix-Don't throw that jug of piss to hard so us Aussies can catch it, Ha Ha. After reading about Space Saver Spares my thoughts have been. A) You can only drive no more than 80 Kph, not sure Mph. B)It only lasts a certain amount of Km's-Ml's before they also have to be replaced. If that's the case how hard would it be to get S.S.Spare Tyre. BeEmDoubleV- You have me thinking different now. Can you advise. I guess your Mini Spare is also called a Space Saver Spare. You say is good for Thousands of Miles. OK - So is it the same as a Normal Tyre only with a smaller width. Would the maximum speed be the same. It can be used over and over again and cover long distances to find a repair shop or get you home from any where when everything is closed. Where would it be best placed on your car |

Lets say Flat on the back of a RWD. If you have to travel a fair distance, I would put (for USA) L/Front on back and S.S. Spare on L/Front. Because the Left Side of your car is on the high side of the road. I guess AWD, left side of car. My situation would be the opposite. Just some logical thoughts. |
