Auto Start/Stop in Park
After driving the vehicle and pulling the car into the garage my wife will put the car in Park. At which time the engine appears to stop. She then hits the Engine Start/Stop Button and the engine starts back up where she will have to go through another two Engine Start/Stop button pushes to shut the car down. Does this sound familiar to anyone? Seems that an Engine Start/Stop button push should not restart the engine in this case.
I have not yet personally seen this so will post more if I get more details.

I think you need to take your foot off the brake.

I don't drive the X1 much so I've made the mistake about 20 times.

Getting out and locking the doors will also shut everything down. At least that's what mine does, I put it in park the engines shuts off. I get out and lock the doors, the radio etc shuts off.

I guess there must be different ways to skin a cat...
Once you arrive in the garage (or final destination), the engine will often shut off automatically as part of Auto Start/Stop feature. Press the P(ark) button in the shift selector (very important obviously.) I've gotten into the habit of engaging the hand brakes. You can then proceed to remove the key from the switch (models without Comfort Access) or simply unbuckle your seat belt, get out, lock the car and walk away (models with Comfort Access.) Except for the P button, you shouldn't mess around any more with the Start/Stop button. The engine will not restart unless you press that button again, which is what's happening to your wife. |

Thanks. I think that makes sense.
Let me turn the question around a little. Let's say I want to keep the car running but lock the doors. I have a dog in the back that I want to stay cool. Will the car "stay running" in park if I lock the doors? I assume Auto Start/Stop will continue to function to keep the interior of the car cool but save gas. I will have to play with these scenarios this weekend!

But yes, if you leave the car running (ASS off) and you get out and lock the door, it will remain running. At least mine with comfort access does. I don't know how you'd get in with out comfort access unless you had the second fob with you. But as said before, don't leave live beings in a locked car, I don't want to hear about it on the news.

when you stop - and are ready to park, just push the start/stop button, the car will automatically go into park and shut off. If you have comfort access the radio will stay on. you have a few options. either when you initially press the start/stop button, jut hold it until everything shuts down, or press the button again to shut the radio off, or get out and lock the doors and everything shuts down.
the best part i like is not having to put it in park, the car does that for you TJ |

+1 with TJ. I never put it in Park. Foot it still on the brake. Just push Stop/Start, remove key and go. Off course I don't normally have ASS activated. I don't have comfort access.

When she pulls into the garage the engine sometimes stops (shuts off automatically) as part of the auto start/stop feature (just as if you were at a stop light.) If she depresses the engine's Start/Stop button (while the engine is already off), the engine will obviously restart -- exactly what's happening to her now. Now, if the car is off (but only as part of the Auto Start/Stop) and she forgets to depress the P(ark) button on the shift selector (as you suggest) and inadvertently removes her foot from the brake pedal mistakingly thinking the car is completely off, guess what will happen? That's right... the engine will restart and the car will start to move forward. This could possibly cause some serious damage in the garage if the driver panics. I think it's a good idea to always depress that little "P" button when you arrive at your destination and save yourself a lot of headaches. There might be some new tricks out there with this new techonology, but putting your car in Park has always been the safe thing to do when you arrive at your final destination. BMW has made it super easy to do this by just pressing a tiny little button. YMMV. |

Yep. As a manual trans driver for many years, a car "stalling" on me is very unnerving. Very glad the 35 doesn't have this "feature."

I disagree, I did read the post, and the owners manual...
For the x28i 1) car comes to a stop in a driveway, garage, parking lot etc. 2) keep foot on the brake 3) press. SS button ( regardless of auto SS state ) 4) observe P illuminated on joystick lever 5) remove foot from brake 6) either press SS again to turn off radio or get out of the car and lock the doors. If you don't have CA removing the key from the ignition will also turn off the radio. It is a very convent feature, and is safe. Our delivery specialist walked us through it at the Welt when we took delivery and they talk about it in the manual too. TJ |

We enjoyed your response and agree. Except the wife doesn't like to be referred to as an issue.
