Question Silver box aside the battery

Just curious, what is the purpose of the silver box aside the battery in the rear trunk (see attached picture).
It looks there are empty sockets… are there some functionalities that I can add?
Tks.

I can't really tell from the picture but it kinda looks like a plate exchanger for heat transfer.

Why would the TCU control bluetooth?

Chrrently have a lot of the trim pieces out of the hatch area and am curious as to which of the control/electronics boxes are which back there. If I remember, I'll try and get some part numbers and run them through RealOEM at some point.

It's called the "Combox". I assume it's short for "Communication Box".

Excerpted from the Combox technical training manual:
Some of its functions include:
• Connection of audio players via Bluetooth
• Simultaneous connection of cell phones and audio players via Bluetooth
• Contacts with images
• Direct Bluetooth profile software update by customer
• Connection of certain iPods using the original USB cable
• Album cover display (for iPod, MTP players, MP3 via USB)
• Office SMS, calendar and notes from cell phone
• Office with email from cell phone

Telematics control unit. Basically a bridge for all the ECU in the car to communicate with each other.

I have the Professional radio and use the dasbhboard USB with a thumb drive. I would love to be able to use it with my iphone too though without having to disconnect the thumb drive. I wonder if it would be possible to use the other If there are two USB hub ports, I wonder if it is possible to use them both. I do not know what option I audio option you would use for this though since there is not a random option available.

And yes, I know I could do this with the aux input but what fun would that be. Plus, I like the line level input more.

You can have 2 items connected at once via usb. Besides the usb in the center console there is one on the left side of the glove box. I have had a usb in the glovebox and my iphone connected via the usb.The one in the glove box is the usb that needs to be used for updating the software. Also the glovebox usb is the usb you need to use to store music on the internal HDD.

Unfortunately, I did not opt for the I drive so I have no HDD only one USB.

Thank you Ukrboy! I didn't know what that box was...

I hope this doesn't come as a duplicate but I spent 2 hours searching my BMW digital manual for this "Com Box" without success. I was wondering if it had something to do with the rear brake pad sensor. But apparently it doesn't! LOL

Its definitely the combox. From what I have read, thats good news as you can do more coding (such as adding the enhanced bluetooth) if your car has the comox (not all X1s have them).
