5w30 vs 0w30 and engine clicking noise

Hi guys,

I'm simply wondering if the N20 engine would be less noisy with 0w30 instead of 5w30 at startup (during the first 30 seconds or so). Anybody tried both weights and can shed some lights?

Also curious if using a BMW LL-01 vs a non LL-01 would make a difference about engine noise.

Thanks!

I would personally not risk a non LL01 oil to try and reduce noise...

It's like using a lower than recommended octane fuel to save a few cents.

I was a Exxon fuel distributor, and know how to use and test oils.

I tested the Factory fill BMW 5w30 whatever it is, and found it to be a very good oil, and at 5k miles almost no wear metal in my X1 s28i N20 engine.

After reading oil reports on BITOG.com, many have come to agree that Mobil 1 0w40 is as good or better than anything out there, and made for high heat German cars.

Mobil 1 0w30 isn't up to BMW's spec, although some other brands could be.

Mobil 1 0w40 might be best oil for nearly any car, and is a thick as needed to stop noise.

Lighter won't work, and 0w40 is the perfect of good flow when freezing, and high temp strength to go maybe 10k miles. If you want BMW's 15k miles recommendation use the Mobil 1 Extended Performance.

I'm a Mobil 1 fan also because I just bought 5 quart jug next door at Walmart for $23.

When I was in Germany on Euro delivery, I checked in hardware store, and Mobil 1 jug cost approx. $100.

Mobil1 website does not have any LL-01 oil available https://mobiloil.com/en/product-sele...QSkgKEdBUyk%3D

Based on what you've told us, your vehicle manufacturer recommends a 5W-30 viscosity and oil that meets BMW Longlife LL-01 or BMW Longlife-01FE. We currently do not offer any motor oils in the United States that meet these specifications.

Yes I'm wondering too about the german castrol 0w-30. Anybody used it and noticed a diminution in engine noise/clicking?

Garage List
I don't want to pour water on the fire here, but I think the noise is from the direct injection, so oil viscosity will not make a difference.

BMW has that long life spec, so Mobil 1 doesn't list BMW on the bottle any more.

Oil is cheap in the US, so 10,000 mile oil changes are right for me.

0w40 is a thin 40 weight which is 12 cst instead of BMW's 5w30 which 10 cst.

BMW want's to run oil for 15,000 miles so Mobil 1 isn't made for that excessive drain period.

If you take your BMW to any shop other than BMW you'll end up with all kinds of oil not as good as Mobil 1 0w40. I'm always going to change myself as long as my shaky hand can pour.

I like it when people that actually know about oil endorse the 10k OCI. :-) Better than seeing "I change it at 5k because I love my car" when in the long run, it makes no difference.
