BMW Maintenance and Warranty Upgrade? X1 Reliability?
Hello my fellow BMW siblings, hope all is well
Being that I am new to the BMW world and cars in general, i wanted to ask about extended warranties and BMW's maintenance upgrade. As you are all aware, we are rather spoiled with BMW and Mini's 0$ warranty and maintenance. When first had my 2012 Mini Cooper, i had taken it in for the first few times for its scheduled oil changes and what not. I didn't pay a thing or have to do anything so i was like "ok". Heres the thing, when my stepmother had to bring in her Odyssey, she had to pay 125$ or something like that, for its service and such. I was quite shocked and that later confirmed how spoiled i was with Mini's maintenance program. So i leased my X1 and in the beginning i had a few problems that were taken care of and i later took note of the value of their programs. I plan to buy my X1 after the lease is up, which is in around 3 years, and so i was thinking of paying the extra 2k, assuming they still have the upgrade, and have my X1 warrantied and maintenance free for a total of 5 years or 100K miles. I would rather pay the extra 2K rather than have a 3-5 year payment. Forgive me in advance, i am still rather new to the game, so right now i am a sponge and i want to absorb as much information as possible. I wanted to get everyone's opinion on this. German vehicles, including BMW, have a well known stereotype of being incredibly expensive following the end of the cars warranty. Now the 3 series has a reputation of being reliable and such and i want to place the X1 in that category as well, because the X1 is more or less a 3 series to begin with. unfortunately the X1 is still rather "new" to the US having only being on the market for 2~3 years now, so it is still too soon to determine its LONG TERM reliability. I know there is a lot of debate on this. I really want to here from those who have exceeded their warranty and hear what they have to say, but everyone is welcome to share. Thanks in advance |

The dealers wouldn't be selling the program's if they didn't make a lot of money off it. The N20 engine is rock solid and never went through any problems like the N55. The biggest expense is pretty much always the brakes, dealer can charge $1,600-1,800 easily for new front and rear rotors and disks but a good independent is much cheaper. BMW got a bad rap due to a couple problem engines like the N54, the old 5.0 liter and the N52 (which was just gaskets).Since this car was based on the E92/91 you really shouldn't have any major problems if you do change the oil, air filter etc. with the possible exception of a water pump. I'm in the same boat with my M235 with a 3 year lease and may buy it at the end of the lease. Find a good independent you trust and you will save a lot of cash. I would only consider the warranty if you plan on putting 100,000K on it. The only advantage of the maintenance problem is saving you from getting hosed on a dealer brake job.

Isn't buying out a lease a very expensive way of getting the car?

I'm not 100% sure but extended warranty doesn't include free maintenance, which you need to purchase separate if you want it. I would stash $2-3k if something major arise and DIY maintenance and repairs. Of course I have ISTA-D for diagnostics which include all instructions for repairs.

I was offered that maintenance warranty extension as well and I passed.
It did seem to cover a lot of stuff, but in the end the 2k+ can go a long way especially if you do some of the work yourself. For example, brake pads are covered, but that is a fairly easy DIY home job for much less than the dealer charges. Now, if you are not a DIY guy, there are a good number of independent shops that charge much less than the dealer for service. |

There is an extended warranty program and an extended maintenance program. They are different programs.
For maintenance it is really all about the number of miles one puts on the vehicle. For the warranty is really all about the reliability of the vehicle. They should not be confused. |
