Yup, according to auto123.com it looks like we're only going to get the 2.5i and 2.8i AWD models in Canada. That may be BMWs way of protecting X3 sales..

That sounds a little farfetched to me....

2 almost-similar engines in performance and design, one of them not being even originally part of the X1 range ? What's the point ?

Some journalistic BS in my opinion...

BMW have done it before in the USA. A few years ago all the 3-series petrols were 6-cyl 3.0l engines but branded as 325i,328i,330i etc. As I understand it has to do with the cost of certifying engines for the American Market. In fact they have done the same in Europe with the 2.0l diesel engine.

I still suspect they will introduce the X1 with a single 3.0l engine branded as a 2.8i. It will only be available as a auto in XDrive form. Other variants will follow later. Personally I think that the X1 will be a niche car in the USA, like the mini. The X3 will probably be the main focus in the next few years as it will appeal more for the NA taste of bigger SUV's

Mario,

Fair enough, but those 3Series already existed as such in Europe, which is not the case for the X1.
I tend to agree with you with an X1 first marketed in its 28i version, then if it sells well, other versions (possibly Diesel-powered) may emerge.

OK, since its pretty much established that the X1 is going to be in the NA market I thought I would post two interesting pictures..... Well I find them interesting

First one is of a X1 pic taken in the USA of a car with steel rims . I have exactly the same combo of steel rims and plastic covers on my winter wheels.

Second pic is of the interior of the X1 M-Sport version which I suspect is also going to be the launch model in NA. The interesting thing here is that gear lever. It looks different from any I have seen to date. Any ideas?

Is it a "real" M-version, or rather an M-Package trim ?

Think its the M-Sport trim although that gearstick looks interesting, it almost looks like the 8-speed auto box on the X3 but still looks like a manual.

Not heard any rumours yet of a full blown X1M....yet

My pleasure :

"A vehicle as racy and powerful as the 2010 M3 Coupe.
Expressive nose able to accomodate a V8 engine.
Stylish rear end with 4 exhaust pipes.
Under the hood, the X1M receives the 4.4L V8 of 414/420 HP.
A small SUV that performs like an M3 for a daily driver"

Now... The site is called VISIONS AUTO (Car Visions), and I think it's about members sending their renderings of future cars.

In other words, photoshop, imagination and wishful thinking are the basic ingredients...

Raining on your parade huh ?

Not really but thanks for the translation. I suspected it was one of the design studio's works. Nice to dream though

The original X3 in the US had the 2.5 liter and it was a dog and I can't see that coming back to the US along with the 2.8 (3 liter). What's the posibility that the 2.5 is really a 2.0 turbo which would be called 2.5 like the 335 is a 3 liter turbo. If the new 3 series gets this engine which is the speculation as the entry level to replace the 2.8 then the X1 could get it at the same time as the new 3 in the spring of 2012 at the launch of the new 3 series.

I agree, there is no 2.0l turbo petrol in the current line-up so would have to be a whole new engine, which I doubt.

Nope, most likely to be a straight six 3.0l engine as used on other models and branded as 2.5i/2.8i/3.0i depending on its state of tune. They did the same thing with the 3-series which all use a single base 3.0l engine (excl M3).

You need to live with the fact that the X1 has lower tech than the new X3 - this is not a US thing but global.

For example the new X3 2.0d has a new 8-speed auto, while the X1 2.0d does not. Also, the X1 chassis will soon be a generation behind - the new X3 chassis is based on the next-gen 3-series.

And another piece of cost-cutting - on the 3-series the optional towbar is electrically retractable while on the X1 it's not - for the same price!

Fact of life guys, get over it or save up for an X3 which is much more expensive.

BMW do not consider M models or existing new variants until a successful launch and successful stability and integration into the market which is normally about two years for a new product.

Within a year the X1 has surpassed over 100,000 units , still has waiting lists and is the no 1. best selling car in the Small Sport activity vehicle segment.
@ Geneva the X1 will expand with the World Premiere of the M-Sport packet.
Adding extra visual appeal to the car for those that want something more sport orientated, visually.

If sales double when the car finally becomes available in the US/Canada then it is something marketing will look at , The US debut is scheduled for the New York autoshow in April.

Speculating of previous discussion it could share the engine and a similar aggressive appearance from the 1 Series M Coupe and maybe Valencia Orange paintwork if BMW are feeling generous. But so far the project only exists on paper.

That's what I'm talking about. Any idea if we'll see a diesel in the first print? Any idea when we'll see the first 4cyl diesel BMW here?
